Fill Selection with Anti-Aliasing: How?
As shown in the screencaps below, I have a simple Selection and I filled it with the Paint Bucket tool. However....now the many curved edges of the selection (it was cursive writing) are now EXTREMELY aliased and almost Tron-like in their appearance.

So, is it possible (please say yes!) to fill a selection with anti-aliasing in GIMP, and if so, how do you achieve this? Thanks as always.

Select-by-color and fuzzy-select are completely evil tools.
Okay, thanks.

That seems a few more steps than I'd expect for something so vital, but I'm sure it will work. So thanks as always, OfNuts.

Possibly you used a select-by-color instead of alpha-to-selection. See "background removal" link in my sig.
Yeah, I just tried to duplicate it on a test image right now, and I couldn't duplicate it again (although I know that that was NOT the first time I'd encountered this).

Using both the Fuzzy Select and the Select by Color, and then growing it, I was able to Bucket Fill and still have anti-aliasing. (I tested it with some of the settings, too, "Fill Whole Selection" vs. "Fill Similar Colors", Threshold, etc., etc.....and I was still always able to get the anti-aliasing!)

So I don't know what the difference was in the time when I was using it on my original post. When I run into this issue again (and I have run into it several times), I'll make sure to save the .XCF and post it here so that you can maybe take a glance at it and diagnose it then.

Attached is a small .XCF file which has an example of this issue.

OfNuts, if you could please take a look at this and tell me what I should do, I'd appreciate it.

Basically, I regularly like to apply white outlines around black text, and I achieve this by Selecting the Text, Growing it, then Bucket Filling that selection. Now, however, there is virtually no anti-aliasing on this outline. (I'm nearly certain that there used to be full anti-aliasing.)

(NOTE: In the .XCF, I accidentally wrote just "aliasing" when what I meant was "anti-aliasing". So, if you look at it, please just imagine an "anti-" before every "aliasing". Sorry!)

Worked great, Paynekj. Thanks a lot.

Here's a screencap and (for the benefit of people from search engines), one way to achieve anti-aliasing in GIMP on Selections is by right-clicking on the "Layer" dialogue > Alpha to Selection > Grow (or whatever) with that Selection.

RE: Fill Selection with Anti-Aliasing: How?
Thanks for the help again, guys. (Sorry I forgot to reply to OfNuts's additional comments.)

For my immediate uses, paynekj's solution worked. I'll definitely make sure to reference your guys's other techniques if and when the need arises.

(Although I also hope that some great GIMP programmer works on properly scaling Aliasing, though I'm sure that that would be difficult.)
