Fancy Text on Image
Hello, this is my first time here.

I've just started using GIMP, mainly for titles on book covers.

I know how to basically put script onto an image, but I'm having a problem when I try to go 'fancy.'

So, I'm starting with the image, placing the words upon it, then trying to give it a Chrome effect. But as soon as I choose chrome, which works, the main image, which I guess is the background now, disappears. I'm sure it's still there, but I just don't know how to merge the two for the finished product.

Help...

Hi Thom and welcome Smile

Where in the menus did you find 'Chrome'?
I believe Chrome will be a script written by a third party, so more details will be needed to know exactly what it does...
Perhaps attach a screen snapshot of the Chrome dialog to help identify the correct Chrome effect you are referring to.
There are multiple scripts for chrome effects for Gimp.
Below the image shows just the ones I have added to my setup.

Also feel free to attach your .xcf file so we can have a better look at your issue and try to assist you further?

It will do that

There are 2 locations in Gimp for making chrome text, essentially they are the same script which is ancient.
Filters -> Alpha-to-logo -> chrome
File -> Create -> Logos -> chrome

Both work, careful with the first, it will remove other layers except the text. You also lose transparency. If you use this make your chrome text separate and copy/paste in.

Hunting through my archive of gimp-stuff, one by fence-post is probably the best of small simple scripts. (attached)

Top to bottom
1. Just a text layer
2. A copy paste using File -> Create -> Logos -> chrome. Note the background set to white, no transparency.
3. Using the fence-post script straight on a text layer. Not a bad idea with these scripts to space the text characters out a little.

Pop the script in your ./gimp-2.8/scripts folder . Remember to unzip it first. You will find the menu entry in
Filters -> Alpha-to-logo -> Fencepost Chrome

Best place for logos is blingchat aka http://www.gimpchat.com have a look in their plug-ins and scripts section
http://gimpscripts.com/ where there are several very good but complicated scripts.
