Fallen at the first hurdle...
Hello,

I have installed GIMP 2.6 but am struggling to get going.

I had a look at the first tutorial here http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Lite_Quickies/ and read where it says "All you should need to know to start here is how to find your image and open it. File -> Open. "

Unfortunately I cannot find anywhere that says 'File'
I have attached a screenshot of what I see when GIMP starts

Please advise

Thanks

The window in your screenshot is the Toolbox. It is not Gimp's main Image window. It also appears much larger than it normally would be. You should be able to resize this window by grabbing the edges and dragging as you would with any standard MS Windows window. There should be a total of three windows when Gimp opens. The File menu you're looking for is on the center one in the screenshot I've included. This is where an image would show up once you opened one.

The attached screenshot is of a slightly older version of Gimp (2.5) on a Linux system, but the general layout is still the same.
