Fake Rain? I give up
I've tried two different tutorials multiple times:

http:////http://graphicssoft.about.com/o...e-Rain.htm

and

http://boitblog.blogspot.com/2011/03/rain-dance.html

and for the life of me, I still can't get any rain effects, all I get is the black screen/rain marks, but I can't seem to get it transferred to the photo or find the preview with the rain on the actual photo. Either I'm missing something in these tutorials, or the tutorials are leaving something out. Either way, I give up.

RE: Fake Rain? I give up
Please see this awesome explanation about tutorials (videos or print) created by an awesome gimp user (hopefully he doesn't mind me linking it)

Also, if you might have skipped pass one step.

Come back to this thread when you get to a part of one of the tutorials you're stuck on & we can try to help. You gotta be patient & pace yourself trying a tutorial, if you want the effect, you need to put in effort.

Stick with the tutorial that seems the easiest of the two.
This one would be better for me since it has more pictures (good balance of text & pictures)

Last,
Did you get your window placements all sorted out from the other thread ?? :

RE: Fake Rain? I give up
I just did the first tutorial that you linked...worked fine for me, there is nothing missing or broken in that tutorial.

The only way that I can see that you would end up with just the dark rain image would be that you are failing to set the 'rain' layer's MODE to 'Screen' in Step 6 of the tutorial.

PS. Just skipping a step, or having or not having a selection active when you do a step, or having the wrong layer selected when you do a step will cause unexpected result that vary from the tutorial you are following.

If you still cannot achieve the result, post your .xcf file so I can have a look to see where you are up to or what is missing or wrong with it.
