Fading Edges of Image - Help
HI everyone...I've been looking all over the place for the last few days and couldnt find anything that helped on this topic. What I am trying to do is, I have an image. I would like to fade the image edges into the background which is colored black. So in essence, I want the image to meld into the background which is black. How is this done. I tried so many things and I cant seem to get it right.

Everytime I get close, to getting it right, my image fades somewhat using the gradient tool and a new opaque white layer but I get white and silver boxes on the edges of my image? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Yes, sorry I'm kind of new to Gimp but yes I'm seeing the checkerboard pattern on the edges of the image. What I want is just for the edges of the image to blend into my background which is black. I just cant seem to get this right.

No its not part of the image. No I am not using layers. Its similar to if lets say I want have my desktop background as black. Now I have an image I want to put on my desktop but instead of the image being square and blunt on the black background, I wan to fade the picture into the background so that the edges or borders fade into the background little at a time. Thanks so much for helping. Sorry too if I'm not explaining correctly as I am new to Gimp and trying to figure out how to do stuff.

- Layer/Transparency/Add alpha channel (if it's grayed, you already have one)
- Select/all
- Select/Shrink: use half the fuzzy border width you want
- Select/Feather: use the border width you want (ie, twice the shrink value)
- Select/Invert
- Delete key: the checkerboard pattern around your image shows where it is transparent

Save as a format that support partial transparency, usually PNG.

Thank You!!!! Thanks so much OfNuts......it worked....thanks again for all of your help.
