fading borders of a selection
I would like to learn to adjust the opacity around the borders of a floating layer. Occasionally, I think, that would permit a selection to blend into a new background.
Where would this silly old novice find a discussion of such techniques?
Thank you guys and all the creators and contributors to the wonderful software that is the Gimp.

RE: fading borders of a selection
There's a "Feather Edges" option you can check when you have the Selection tool active.

Sometimes, for different effects I also do this:

Paste the floating selection to a new layer. Save the selection to a path, stroke the path (on the new layer) with the eraser using a fuzzy-edged brush. Then reselect and copy paste the fuzzy-edged selection where ever you want (or preferably just leave it on it's own layer and shuffle the layer deck accordingly).
