Extract a Logo off of the Background

I'm new to GIMP and I'd like to know how to cut out or extract an object from it's background.

There's a fest being held at my college and I've been assigned to cut out the logo from the posters of the previous year (I've attatched a copy of it below). I've tried using the cut tool, the lasso and also the foreground selection tool. The cut tool and the lasso tool didn't work as the object is quite complicated whilst the foreground selection tool happens to coat the logo instead of the background. I've tried invert and it doesn't work. Is there any other way to extract the logo?

RE: Extract a Logo off of the Background
Last post for me for the morning.

Try this:

If you only want to cut out the badge(easier) with wings:

1. Using the paths tool Path or free select tool Freeselect
Click each point around the wings and badge (don't worry too much about the tiny space between the wings, leaving those spaces intact will prevent jagged edges.)
-Complete a selection around your cut-out
2.With the selection still active
Go to Select > Grow...
-1 - 2 px
3. Select > Feather...
(repeat #3 if the edges need to be smoother)
4. Copy & paste as new layer

If the edges are too soft/cut off, reduce the amount you feather before you copied, or grow the selection a little more.

If you can't get it just right, post your results and I'll do a followup Sunday night
