Erasing semi-transparent selections
I want to erase anything which is about 75% transparent so I do the following:
1. Select Fuzzy Select Tool.
2. Select a Threshold of 190.
3. Select a transparent part of the screen.
4. The semi-transparent part of the screen is now selected.
5. I choose the Eraser with a large size and move it over the semi transparent edge.

The problem I get is that when I do the above the Eraser doesn't just work on the selection it also erases stuff which isn't selected. It seems that when you select a transparent part of the screen and GIMP shows a line where the select should end, it just ignores it...

Any ideas?

I've quoted to the step that could be problematic (see below)

I'd suggest a few options (individual methods):

1. creating a manual selection either by using the quick mask http://www.wikihow.com/Use-QuickMask-in-Gimp

or
2. path (Then "path to selection") tool Path

OR
3. Freeselect free select around the areas that are transparent, then either erase or push delete.

*The reason for a manual select is automatically selecting with the fuzzy select or color by select, may select unseen transparent pixels outside of your intended selection due to jpeg artifacts or image quality/imported format.

RE: Erasing semi-transparent selections
Thanks for the replies, much appreciated, I've learnt a few more techniques.
The layer mask looks like it'll do what I want.
