Eraser won't erase
This has *got* to be simple - the eraser leaves everything untouched. I have tried tweaking all the settings to no avail.

Can someone help with this?

Thanks

Also check under "Tool Options" and make sure "Brush:" isn't set to "clipboard" or blank

this has got me a few times painting/using paint tools (erase, airbrush, etc...)

RE: Eraser won't erase
I still can't get this to work. I am making a bigger and bigger mess. I have a black line on a white background. I want to make it go away , i.e. to make the black, white. I have tried selecting the region and deleting it but I get a checkerboard.

This can't be hard, no way.

which is a little different from the original question

You are not erasing a black line over a white background. The black pixels are part of the background. That is why the transparency pattern shows.
To remove the black line, paint over it in white.

Easy to do in this case, a solid colour. What if the background had been a complicated image?

Next time, make a new transparent layer, work in that layer, paint your lines and erase to your hearts content without affecting anything else.

RE: Eraser won't erase
RileyDWiley,
So to get rid of transparency on your layer and make it a "paper" or solid layer in essence

right-click on the layer in your layers window. Click "Remove Alpha channel"

You can add it if you need to later.
.
.
.
By default when you open a new project (blank) the background layer is opaqe(non-checkered)

So each time you make a new layer, if you want it to act like paint in erasing, remember to "remove the alpha channel"
