epson scanner not seen in gimp
Hello folks,
I've just loaded debian 7 wheezy with gnome 3.8. When opening the gimp I go to CREATE but only find sane showing the cam ... I think the thing I need is called something like quiteinsane in order for gimp to see the epson stylus XS230 ... can someone advise me please.

RE: epson scanner not seen in gimp
Not looking at all promising.

Not listed as supported by SANE
http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html#Z-EPSON

and no linux drivers listed for anything
http://esupport.epson-europe.com/Product...U003D&tc=6

The quiteinsane package I think has been deprecated. Looks like the last one was around 2008. You can still find 32 bit packages
http://www.filewatcher.com/m/quiteinsane...946-0.html
or maybe an old 'buntu might install if you are 64 bit
http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/po...iteinsane/

Normally for Gimp you need the xsane package, it will either find your scanner or not as the case may be.

That is the Debian Testing repo.

Another way if you have any windoze installation disks (eg XP) is to use VirtualBox and run the scanner from there.

Hmmm ... unfortunately, I have installed xsane with no luck seeing the epson.

I do not have anything windows so does that mean I cannot scan the epson anywhere on linux at all?

RE: epson scanner not seen in gimp
Yeah, that was where the "works or not, as the case may be" comes in. I was a bit surprised that there were no linux drivers at all on the Epson site. Normally they are quite good with linux. Everything from Win XP to Mac OSX was listed, but no linux.

There is a third party scanning utility, VueScan that will probably work but it is comparatively expensive. Cheaper to get an OEM WinXP from ebay and install it in a VirtualBox.

RE: epson scanner not seen in gimp
You mentioned windows XP and virtualbox ... if I loaded wine (which is XP I think ... or bits of it!) could I get virtualbox and load it on there and try that way?
If that is a possibility then how do I actually load vb? Can I do it within wine?
I am asking this because, according to the epson manual, the scanner will only work with XP or Vista. It's a bit weird in that the scanner appears to have the ability to scan directly to Windows!

... Yes, but can I get my epson to talk to wine? If so ... how?

RE: epson scanner not seen in gimp
I have never known a windoze printer driver or scanner work via Wine Is No Emulator.

Having a look at my LMDE installation and the Debian testing repos there is a not too up to date Virtualbox package there, but you are probably better off going straight to the VB site and getting the appropriate package. There is one there for Wheezy, either 32 or 64 bit.
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads

Installation, all sorts of ways, for a GUI use Gdebi. Looks like this.

Now be prepared for learning curve. A VM is what it says, a virtual computer running in a real computer. The OS installs the same as a real computer (although you can use an ISO image as well as a physical CD/DVD). Once installed you have to add some guest additions to make the best use of it and any software you need,printer/scanner driver, has to be installed same as a 'real' computer.

This is what my PCLOS looks like, you can see the memory allocated etc. I have an old Canon ip4500 printer where the linux driver is so bad I use XP for printing.

When it is running, the virtual screen is 1280x960 - it is WinXP.

Your best bet is to sign up with an appropriate forum maybe

RE: epson scanner not seen in gimp
Well, you maybe right about it not being worth it but at least I'm finding my way around linux a bit more.

Right, I've downloaded the vbox file to my computer ... now comes a really dumb question:

How do I actually install from that file?
