enlarging an image ?
Hi all
I am new to gimp and to this forum Confused

I have an image that is quite small, cropped from a larger image.
I want to enlarge it to 317 mm wide keeping it in proportion.

Using the scaling tool I changed to mm and increased width to 317mm this leaves me with a 'window' into the top corner of the image.
I then used 'fit canvas to layers' and the canvas increases in size ok but it is empty (little grey squares) except for the top corner showing the small window into the image!

If I click on it with the resize tool I can see the whole image enlarged but as soon as i click on the 'scale' button it vanishes again and leaves the small window again?

can someone tell me what i should do please?

Thanks

Mike

RE: enlarging an image ?
Thanks for your reply.
Unfortunately I don't understand what you mean.

firstly why cant an image be any size i want it? I'm sure your right but i don't understand why.
why has the "Image/Scale image" dialogue got choices from mm, inches, to yards etc if i can only scale it in pixels?
I'm not worried about quality loss BTW

thanks

Mike

(Sep 1, 2012 22:05)ofnuts Wrote:  The amount of detail in a sharp image is given by the number of pixels it contains. When you enlarge the image, you add pixels to it, but these new pixels are interpolated from the existing ones, and this doesn't add detail (it won't add leaves to a tree...) and the resulting image is blurry. There are also some very sophisticated algorithms that can recreate fake details (on images than lend themselves well to this...). There are plugins for Gimp that support some of them (resynthetizer). But I can't decently give more advice without looking at your image first. There are also solutions where the images is completely redrawn (usually the easiest and best thing to do with logos).

Thanks for your advice.
I have decided to do this another way now.
