enlarging a tiny photo
Took a photo over skype. It was very tiny, I suppose because the person I did skype with was using and Iphone. I would like to enlarge it but it gets fuzzy and pixelates. Any suggestions?

RE: enlarging a tiny photo
It's harder to resample an image's pixels from small to big because you reach a point where the interpolation makes it blurry if you go too big. (example: a 160x160 pic up to 640x480)

Some things to try,
1 -resize your image once until it starts to blur a little(as much as you can before blur)
-Duplicate the picture layer
-Filter > Edge-detection > edge... (set to 30-4o on sobel)
(invert colors if needed)
- Then set your new layer mode to blend with the original picture(so the edges show but not the color, whatever looks better/sharper)

2 Try the sharpen filters(one or the other) (for motion blurs you can try opposite blurring; Filters > Blur > Motion-Blur)

#1 Filters > Enhance > Sharpen (it works if its a little blurry)
#2 Filters > Enhance > unsharp mask
(start with a small radius, big ammount, then slowly raise radius until it looks ok)
If the above filters/tips don't work you could try a few plugins if your familiar with downloading using them from the gimp registry.

"liquid rescale" works nicely for down-scaling(it can extend the background to a point) but it might work on up-scaling too.
-You can make preservation masks on subjects you don't want to morph/size/deform
-If you get it and you have a lot of layers, resize it in its own file because it will resize the canvas
Also,it will be in the layers menu section.
(make sure you get the right plugin for version of gimp, or it might not work)

Let me know if any of these tips helped ^_^
