Engraved/Raised Text ?

[/url] and I would like to have the same exact effect for a banner I'm trying to make except in black colored font. However, I tried to follow the same exact directions and I just can't seem to make it happen, brown or black font.

Can someone please break it down any easier than this? I know it seems like the easiest tutorial to follow but the outcome just doesn't seem to match the example.

Engraving does not/cannot work on black! The 3D effect comes from added shading and you can't shade pure black. Actually the tutorial is using a dark brown which is already a bit borderline for that kind of effect. With not-complete black (#202020) you can see something (but I wonder if this makes a nice banner).

IMHO a much better method is:

1) create a layer with your text on white or black on 50% gray (#808080)
2) apply a gaussian blur (Filters/Blur/Gaussian) to that layer (the amount of blur corresponds to the width/smoothness of the slopes)
3) create a layer with you final color
4) apply the bumpmap filter (Filters/Map/Bumpmap) to it, using the text as a bumpmap.

The above caveats about bumpmap efficiency on very dark (or very light) colors still apply.

I have a tutorial about how to create 3D Text, which is the "raised text" technique you are looking for. It involves downloading a Script from the Gimp Plugin Registry, the link and directions for which I have in the description box, and it allows you to create this effect for ANY color, including BLACK.
