Enable GPU Acceleration in Gimp 2.8 RC1
Hi all,

I'm a long time user of Gimp. I use it for work and my work involves editing images on the scale of 22000 x 22000 px. With the Gimp 2.8 RC1 the release notes state the GPU acceleration can be enabled with the command line "GEGL_USE_OPENCL=yes"

How do I enable this line? Is it through starting Gimp via a batch file? I'm using the Windows 64 bit binaries so perhaps this was a switch that needed to be set during compiling Gimp. I'm not quite adept at compiling programs though...

Anyways if anyone knows how to enable GPU acceleration (or if it's already enabled) help would be much appreciated! Otherwise... other performance improving tips help... 16GB of DDR3-1600 helps with a cache size of 10GB but my 1090T @ 4ghz can't push pixels fast enough.

Thanks!

The batch file would work, but you can also create this as an environment variable (Control Panel/System/Advanced...)

Thanks! I'm not sure however, where to place the variable in the batch file or in the Advanced Settings variables window. I don't typically mess around with commands and variables, I just make the pretty pictures Smile

If you could, would you show me what sort of command line I need to write?

Thanks!

Heheh yeah most Gimp users aren't big on Windows...

Here's the batch file I came up with, I'll try the environmental variable tomorrow:

@echo off
set GEGL_USE_OPENCL=yes
c:
cd \
cd "GIMP 2\bin\"
gimp-2.8.exe

According to the Sourceforge statistics for my Gimp scripts site, over 70% Gimp users are on Windows. And my scripts need python support, which is always available on Linux, but requires a specific install on Windows.
