drop a layer from one canvas to another?
So i am converting from Photoshop and there is one common task i used all of the time which i cannot seem to figure out in Gimp. I have two canvases open, each with a few layers. I select the move tool and then start dragging the layer on one canvas to try to drop it into the other canvas. In Photoshop when you do this it creates a new layer on the dropped canvas consisting of the dropped layer, and the layer resets to its original position on the first canvas.

In Gimp however when I try this its as if i dropped the layer way outside of the viewable area of the first canvas, and nothing gets added to the second canvas i want to drop it into.

Am i missing something obvious here?

No, you aren't missing anything. Use Edit/Copy, and Edit/Paste as new layer

so just to be clear, there is no way to do it by dragging and dropping?

No... you can drag/drop an image file on an open image and it will be added as one or more layers but you can't drag layers across images (AFAIK).

I got no errors when starting the program and I could drag & drop icons from the desktop.

Interesting, I am not a great believer of drop'n'drag - for file management too easy to move a file to somewhere unexpected.
But for Gimp, can be done, AFAIK copy only, not move.
Click_hold and drag from the source image to the target image. The copied layer is inserted above the active layer.

A quick experiment with Gimp 2.8 and wondering how tabbed images perform, since there is only one image on view.
With the source open, click_hold and drag to the target tab, don't let up on that mouse button. The target image opens, now complete the drag to the canvas.

FANTASTIC RESPONSE! Thank you! However, I'm using GIMP 2.8.6 and this isn't working for me. I click_hold and drag the layer I want to transfer, drag it to the target tab without releasing, and after the target image open, I release the mouse-button onto the canvas (and I've even tried doing so onto the tab itself, just for giggles), yet nothing happens... The target image remains as it was, without the (seemingly-) moved layer.

Can you or anyone else help solve this? It would be a shame if this new tab feature didn't allow for drag & dropping of layers.

Thanks for your help!

RE: drop a layer from one canvas to another?
It gets a little complicated.

By far the easiest way is a straight forward copy/paste

Alternatives

Go out of single window mode and it should work

or

Detach the layers dialog which then gives an option to stay on the original image.

Brilliant! Thank you muchly... I have not studied nor explored the "new" stuff that's been changed & added since my last, long-ago GIMP update... I'm VERY glad that users can still opt to have ol' school options available (like being OUT of SIngle-Window Mode, or using Detach Tab to have floating docs).

Thanks again for the help. I look forward to watching the rest of those posted vids. (Given your succinct description of the vid, and that you share the first (screen-) name as the poster of those vids, I assume they are yours.)
