Download Woes - Disk Image on OSX
Good Morning! Extremely technically challenged user here! I "accidentally" downloaded GIMP yesterday while still in my "which download to use for my Mac" research. I downloaded the plain, nopython (?), drag to your applications folder version. I think this will be fine for my needs, and it seems to be working OK - I still have a HUGE learning curve challenge ahead of me. My concern is that it appears as a disk image on my desktop. Is this what is supposed to happen? GIMP appears as an application in my Applications folder (gimp-2.8.4-nopython-dmg-1.dmg) and I have moved it to the Dock for ease of opening. Do I need to do anything else?

Thanks for any help!

RE: Download Woes - Disk Image
Thanks for your reply and suggestion. By "erase" I assumed you meant to drag it to the trash, which I did. It "ejected" as it hit the trash. So I clicked on the GIMP icon on the dock, and it basically re-installed, opened fine, and the disk image is back on the desktop. I'm guessing now that's where it needs to stay.....

This is part of the screen shot.... not sure if I was using the correct terminology in using "disk image". Disk icon might have been more accurate...

RE: Download Woes - Disk Image on OSX
Thanks for the extra suggestion about gimpchat.... Just to make this a little more interesting, I dragged the GIMP icon to my applications folder, but it is still on the Desktop.

A "help" search defines this icon as "Physical storage devices located on a network or on the Internet."

And in a really strange twist, all of my "open recent" files in Inkscape are no longer displayed. Files are still there, the list is gone. I have been using Inkscape for 2.5 years and that has never happened. And the list disappears everytime I open GIMP.

RE: Download Woes - Disk Image on OSX
This is an update on the "Open Recent" option of Inkscape. I posted in the Inkscape User Forum and got some info including this as part of the explanation.

"it's a known and fairly widespread conflict between 'GtkRecentChooserMenu' and the AppMenu"

Apparently this will affect GIMP as well after I open/close Inkscape. Am looking for some help with Applescripts so I can use a workaround or (GULP!) write a script for it.

I have not had a chance to post in GIMPchat about the disk icon - maybe over the weekend when work does not cut into my "playtime".

At any rate, I will post back in case, at some point, someone else faces this issue.

RE: Download Woes - Disk Image on OSX
Well, one dilemma solved.... and I have to admit I'm a little embarrassed.... seems when I dragged the .DMG file to my Applications folder, I thought I was done. But I never opened it and dragged GIMP.APP to the folder. And the more I thought about it, the more I realized that GIMP was in fact opening from a "disk". The file was not labeled GIMP.APP as the instructions read, but dragging the icon into the Applications folder did the trick! The disk icon is gone from my Desktop.

Thanks again, for your thoughts and help and making my brain work a little harder.

Now onto Applescripts.....

RE: Download Woes - Disk Image on OSX
Just one final post here.... At the suggestion of a response in the Apple Support Community forum, I downloaded version 2.8.6 (had originally downloaded 2.8.4), This seems to have cleared up the "open recent" issues.

Hope this info can help someone else along the way!
