download problem
I downloaded 2.8. All it opens to is a blank white screen with a partial GIMP mascot, and a t all tool bar on the elft side. No way to open images or any of the rest of it. Is it likely a bad doownlaod, that I should uninstall and reinstall? Or something other? Thank you

RE: download problem
Try dragging & dropping the image file onto the transparent mascost window / canvas from the folder you save the images to.

Or "File > Open" then navigate to the folder and click open. again.

If you want to open multiple small file sized(mbs) images (limit to 3 or 4 at a time maybe)
click
"File > Open as layers..."
Then ctrl+click, or shift+click(to select files next to eachother.)

Gimp won't automatically open an image just by starting the program, unless you have Gimp in your right-click "open with..." context menu in explorer.

For a visual of the menus, see previous post Wink

RE: download problem
If you can post an image of what you see when it loads will help us...
Where are you downloading from?
The Gimp menu can be toggled on and off via the Edit->Preferences dialog. Then under Image Window->Default appearance.
Also via the View menu.
Is there a small arrow icon in the very top left area of the gimp mascot screen? If so it also gives you access to the menus.

RE: download problem
Just a thought:

Looking at the window decoration in the screenshot, it looks very like linux KDE 'oxygen'

I know this has been imported for use with Win 7, but maybe that theme and Gimp do not work together.

Just as an experiment, try the standard Win theme and see if it makes any difference.

Quote:Rich, this is *my* screenshot Smile (done in Linux with KDE Oxygen as you noted).

My mistake. So Kevin L please ignore that suggestion.

I wonder if this is the problem?

Installing on a notebook with a typical xga/wxga display has a limited depth 786 pix.
A first opened gimp installation looks like this (too many screenshots for inline so just the links)

You can go straight to single window mode then maximise the single window but it looks like this.

There are hot spots on all the dock borders that allow resizing. Find the one on the tools, click and drag to make wider.

Once set up the way you like it, go into edit -> preferences -> window management, untick save on exit, click on save now.

RE: download problem
Thanks to all who were generous enough to reply. It was more than I expected, frankly. However, I can tell by the responses that my original post wasn't clearly worded. The screen that I got last night had NO tools, FILE, EDIT, Select, View image, etc etc on it. This mornings attempt DOES have those.

I bought a book for Gimp beginners. Even it doesn't tell me how to get images into GIMP. The image I want to try to learn by modifying, is in WORD 2010. Plus I have computer problems, so life ain't so hot right now.

I'll keep muddling until I figger it out or blow the machine up trying. Thanks to you all.
