distort image to fit non standard shape
I am trying to distort/shape a photo to fit into another shape, in the shape of a shield. Its something that would be reused on otehr pictures.

so if you can guide me in the right direction, I will be a pretty happy chap.

2 things i would like to do, first is of course as above

the otehr, is there any way to creat like a rubber stamp or a cutting tool, that once I have the shape I want created, I can use that to copy/cut/paste that image shape from otehr images also ?

cheers :-)

In Gimp 2.8 see the "Cage" tool.

You can isolate the resulting "shield" (select and erase the rest), and save as a PNG (or any other format that supports transparency). In other images, use "File/Open as layers" top get a new layer with the shield in it.

RE: distort image to fit non standard shape
yeah, i treid that, had shield on own layer, created new layer, copy/pasted the image I wanted to fit inside it but it doesnt seem to shape to the shield, it just distorts within its own layer. I expected I could drag it to the edges of the shield to make it have the same area'

Its to use for clan bages, so each person can have a standard image with their own picture within the shiled

There is no need to distort anything then. The image you want to put on the shield just needs to have a transparent background and be put in a layer above the shield layer so that the shield appears to be its background. See attached XCF.

RE: distort image to fit non standard shape
You don't need to distort the image... At best you clip it to the inner edge of the shield, but ideally you take an image with a transparent background. and put it over the shield. Since the shield has some shadow on bottom right, you apply the same kind of shadowing on your image to make it look part of the shield:

- on the image layer: "Layer/Transparency/Alpha to selection" (makes a selection that covers your added image)
- add new layer
- create white-to-black diagonal gradient (from 10:00 to 4:00)
- put gradient layer in multiply mode
- adjust effect using opacity slider

lol, hello again... I've seen you before somehere I am sure ;-)

doing that is the easy bit but not what I want to achieve, I dont just want tp layer another image over a portion of the inner shield. I want the new image to conform to the shape of the inner shield.

RE: distort image to fit non standard shape
Try starting with an image larger than the shield, then place your cage points on its border, and drag the cage points to the inner shield...

Then clip the layer outside the shield: et a selection on the inner shield (path or else), invert the selection, select import image layer, and delete.
