Disappearing toolbox icons
I dunno if it is me, kde, gimp, or what.. but I can be editing along..yada yada.. do this, do that, and then look over and the toolbox on the left is missing most of the icons.. kinda like the scaling is wrong and the icons are pushed off the bottom under the tool options underneath it. sometimes it takes the usual layout with like 5-6 icons wide and replaces it with only 2 wide, sometimes only 1 wide. I tried stretching it and bringing it back, floating and redocking.. all with no fixy.

The only way I have figured out how to "undo" this is to close and restart gimp. Which is a pain when you have a mess of open files in various states of not done yet..

Any clues would be appreciated.

RE: Disappearing toolbox icons
That is strange behaviour.

What is going on just before the change in size occurs. In-and-out of single window mode, full screen (F11) or ????
Are you using the regular Gimp theme or some other

Since this is transient and vanishes with a restart it could be to do with 'buntu GTK implementation.

Do you have any KDE window specific settings in force?
example. http://i.imgur.com/nBbFoyc.jpg this is KDE (4.10.5) but in PCLinuxOS

You say you tried stretching. Do you mean you tried dragging the window back with the hot spot while in single window mode.

I could only get down to 1 icon wide by closing the tool options dock, so next question
Have you rearranged the docks in any way?

I havent noticed specifically what I would be doing before it happens.. it does seem kinda random, but it might be event related and I just havent noticed yet. I dont use full screen mode and have not changed any themes.

This is very possible. I am in Mint which is Ubuntu based.

Wow.. I didnt know that dialog existed.. if nothing else, this is a knowledge nugget of great use. Everything there is defaults tho..no special settings.

I tried mid-sizing the window, I am in single window mode, and then resizing it a few different ways, maximizing it, then minimizing it, baically working with the whole window first to no effect.

Then I tried resizing the toolbox within the app, stretching it horizontally and back..still to no effect. Then I undocked it which if I remember correctly all the tools were there.. and then redocked to no effect.

In my course of playing with Gimp I have played with docking many of the tools, I have accidentally lost the tool box and tool options dock at one time or another, had to re-dock them, added docks to the right side, floated them, closed them, etc.. but I always try and end up with just the toolbox on the left/top and the tool options on the left/bottom.

Since I am relatively new, here are the things I do pretty regular...

Open, open recent.
Copy layers, copy web pics, copy asst things.. paste as layers.
Crop crop crop
Select rectangle, magic wand
Delete Selections
Fill

Thats a lot of my main usage.. although I do wander around from time to time playing with other things, I am basically making web pics for websites I am building, almost always from some source, and exported to jpg or png.

I have a job to work on shortly so I will try and notice when it gets weird and what I was doing. It seems to be happening pretty regular.

Thanks for the indepth reply/questions..

This is kinda what I end up doing.. I have figured out most of the kb shortcuts I need and do the menu until I can close/reopen.. I havent seen it fix itself yet tho

RE: Disappearing toolbox icons
Appologies, I thought you were using Kubuntu. I do have a LMDE KDE installation but it is now more Debian than Mint.

You do not seem to be doing anything out of the ordinary, much the same as my usual work flow.

Since it is a fairly new install and you do not seem to to too bothered with a custom setup

I would try a reset

Edit -> Preferences -> Window Management -> Reset to default values.

Restart Gimp and that gets back to the 3 window mode, tools & tool options on the left, image window center, dialogs on the right.

Then go to Windows menu and single window mode. Note it does make a difference where the 3 windows are positioned before going into single window mode.

When you have a bit of time to spare try with the tools/dialogs on the right or left of the image window before going to single window mode.

If you do not like the result you can always go back to the defaults.

I still think it is strange behaviour, must be a Mint 15 thing.

RE: Disappearing toolbox icons
Since I have no idea how many settings I have played with, I went ahead and did as you suggested and then did a reset all.. I think I might try the default multi-window for a while and see how that goes for both stability and for workflow. I just did single window because thats what Im used to.. and that not what the Gimp is about Smile

@SC23
At a risk of getting very boring about the Gimp interface, since you already are on the Gimp learning curve, busy with work and I do not want to confuse you. Treat this as background info.

There are advantages to using multi-window mode
You can compare two images side-by-side or drag-n-drop layers without detaching tabs for example. But easy to swap between so no need to be dogmatic about either.

From a historical point of view, I always used to set up Gimp to start with two windows, image and tools.
If you get a chance, this is Gimp 2.6 from 3 years ago.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83b3vWngnmo

Moving on and I would hate to see Gimp stagnate, swapping dialogs around in Gimp 2.8
http://youtu.be/D7P_yFcGT9w

There are advantages to having all the tools and dialogs on one side, got to be more efficient. I think Ofnuts uses this arrangment.

What do I do on a new installation?
1. Go into single window mode.
2. Size the window and the docks to suit
3. Choose a brush, type & size rather than an airbrush. Choose a font and size. etc
4. Make sure I am on the layers tab and brushes tab.
edit: just had a look at my own video Wink
4a. Lock the dialog tabs to prevent accidental detaching

5. Then I go into edit -> preferences.
tool options -> save tool options now -> untick save tool options on exit.
windows management -> save windows positions now -> untick save windows positions on exit.

So I know Gimp will start looking the same every time. Does not suit everyone, a matter of choice.

and yes I do use KDE special windows settings, it is in the size and position tab (not shown in earlier screenshot)
Gimp in the same place & size on the monitor on each start.

RE: Disappearing toolbox icons
Ok... after resetting everything I was doing some work. I had 2 smallish images open. I was working on applying some simple gradient, selected a bg color and when I exited, this was what my toolbox looked like.

I then closed just the toolbox and reopened it and the icons were back.

(Aug 20, 2013 00:07)ofnuts Wrote:  Yes, the real problem is that sometimes the icon spacing gets a lot wider, so the icons don't all fit in the alloted area.

The prob is that I didnt resize it.. it was all good.. then.. it was screwy.. and even if you handle-drag resize the toolbox window all the way across the screen you never get all the icons back... it does however appear to be an icon sizing problem as you suggest since when you hover over an icon the indented area stretches all the way to the window frame..or next icon when it is 2-row screwed.

I may try an uninstall reinstall next.. I have enuf problems just doin what I need to do in Gimp without AHA! Try it without THESE tools! Bwahahahahah (lightening flashes, full moon..etc..)

I've overviewed most of this thread and it looks to be a os/distro stylesheet issue maybe?
So apologies in advance if any of the below was tried already.

Have you tested your current gimp in other distros of linux, ubuntu or with other OS's?

3 other options I can think of trying
1. Try to change the theme of gimp (downloading the stable gtk2 theme pack) if you haven't tried already.

2. Check to see if you can change the theme/icon sizes of your current distro (global system visuals)

3. If it's not much impact to your workflow or to transferring over, a good solution would be to switch to the best distro(visually & functionally for gimp & your other apps ifpossible) or OS's

RE: Disappearing toolbox icons
AAaaaannd an update.. I tried some different themes and the tools still got weird after a while. I also happened upon another thread like mine the other night here at the forums so it isnt just me.. not sure if thats good or bad.. as for the OS options.. while not "married" to Mint/KDE I have a LOT of time and effort into it already.. and its not a for fun kinda thing.. this is my workstation and at this point I cant do another re-do and keep up with the work things I have to do.. luckily all I really need to do with Gimp is hack and slash things like cropping and basic image manipulation as my primary role is PHP/MySql developer.. I guess Im left with riding out the storm until a newer fixed version comes out..

I have found that closing and opening the toolbox does fix it for a while.. so at least theres a small window of help there..

lol, ride out the storm Smile Yet one more idea you've given me. Try dragging the toolbox option window out of the tools dock to make it it's own window.

Then ressize it to show everything, does that work? Thats all I got for now.

RE: Disappearing toolbox icons
It appears to be a scaling issue with the icons. dragging the box to resize it across the screen does show more/most of the icons...but it is kinda untenable to really work with. I have figured out the kb shortcuts for the things I do most often and use those with or without the toolbox now, so the impact is much lessened and if I need the toolbox I close and open it and its good for like 10-20 minutes or so.
