de-selecting part of the selection
I'm getting the hang of tool "o" & tool "shift o".

After I make this selection, is there a way to deselect only part of it?

Especially when the part is not connected to the rest of the selection.

Thank you.

RE: de-selecting part of the selection
several ways.

Look into the modes for the select tools, they are, add, subtract, union.

put one into subtract mode then surround the bit you do not want, and it is deleted.

Another way, quick mask, bottom of the select menu
toggle it on, paint in black to remove, paint in white to add.
when finished toggle off.

Like me, getting a bit long in the tooth, this video all about the selection tools.

the interface is gimp 2.6, they work just the same in 2.8 except foreground select where the colours have changed.

RE: de-selecting part of the selection
Thanks. I got that going.

It seems I have to hit the rectangle button every time I want to change tools. For instance I just got done brightening a section and I want to go to erase; but even though the erase tool shows up, it won't erase unless I push rectangle first (which seems to snap gimp out of the previous tool). Then I select the erase tool again and it will work.
Can you tell what is happening?
Terry

RE: de-selecting part of the selection
Today I wanted to select a color to erase.
The selection would appear but as soon as I let go of the mouse, the selection disappears.
I had just quit gimp and reopened with the picture. This was my first operation.
Same thing; as soon as I let go of the mouse, the selection disappears.

Can you make out anything with this?
