Custom Resize of Canvas

I need to resize the canvas for some custom work. All I can accomplish is to resize the canvas and then do a crop and paste to the correct size. Why is the canvas resize locked into proportional sizing only?
Is there another setting I could change? The added steps of cropping and pasting to get to the right canvas size is a hassle.

Thanks. I had no clue the picture of the chain served a purpose. I thought it was just a decorative picture. I did not see any reference to unlocking the resize when I tried to search the manual. Is there a way to get a text version of the manual?

There maybe a PDF version of the docs floating around but I don't remember where I've seen it. There are however several sites devoted to tutorials and introductory material for Gimp.

Thanks. I was unable to accomplish a search in the Help Documentation in its native HTML format. So, I converted it over to an ePUB eBook. You are welcome to it if you wish to post it. If you would like it in another format such as .lit let me know and I'll be glad to do that.

For the original format, the windows file search works. In practice I google things and google usually leads me to the relevant page on docs.gimp.org
