Cropping issue?
Hey everyone,

I'm new to GIMP, only been using it about a week. I recently made a website off of blogger. The template provides a slideshow that allows you to put cropped images (960 px wide and 400 tall) inside of it. I've had a lot of trouble trying to crop my images down to this size using GIMP and I'm hoping you guys can help me.

I successfully cropped and put three older images on the website, but when I try to add newer images, GIMP crops them REALLY small. I know that my images are HUGE, for example: the one I'm trying to crop to use on the website right now is 3872 by 2592. When I use "Image -- Canvas size" and unlink the Width and Height, and change them to 960 x 400, it makes the selection VERY small. WAY too small to use on my site.

Any tips? i tried using the actual "Crop" tool but all that did was confuse me even more...and of course when I tried "scale image", it just warped.

Thanks in advance!
Jillian

RE: Cropping issue?
When you scale down an image, you usually need to keep the aspect ratio (width/height factor). Your images (likely from a DSLR) have a 1.5:1 aspect ratio. The maximum image allowed 960x400 has a 2.4:1 aspect ratio, so you cannot just scale your pictures to that size.

Your options:

- keep the whole photo height: scale your image down to 600x400 ("Image/Scale image"). You may need to tell the page composer to center the image. Otherwise you can also make a 900x400 image with your 600x400 image in the middle and two 150 pixels margins on the sides with the color of your page background.

- use the whole width: scale your photo down to 900x600 ("Image/Scale image"), then crop to 900x400 using the Crop tool (Crop). Yes, this means you have to shed the top or bottom of your image, or a bit of both; just find the more interesting part to keep. You may also have to redo some of you pictures, knowing that you will crop them to some cinemascope-like format.

RE: Cropping issue?
Thanks for your advice.. I tried keeping the whole photo height but the problem is, to fit this slideshow header, the image has to be 960 x 400, not 900 x 400... so it stretched out my image once i put it into the slideshow.

shouldn't there just be a simple way i can crop my image to those specific measurements?

thanks again.

Sorry, my mistake, replace 900 by 960 in my explanations.

RE: Cropping issue?
As well as the above

All sorts of ways that you can do this with Gimp.
Instead of adding a border to keep the aspect ration, cropping and resizing might be better for certain images. All depends on the image.

A 2 minute video that might give a pointer to cropping.
