crop with rotation
I am missing a crop tool which can rotate the crop rectangle. Similar to photoshop's tool. I found no way to rotate the crop rectangle in gimp. How do you cut out something from an image if it needs to be rotated while cropping? I tried rotating first then cropping but it does not give me enough precision so I end up with transparent areas at the border.

RE: crop with rotation
Two possibilities:

Simple, but you have to be accurate because each action with slightly blur the selection, so it should be done in as few actions as possible:

Make a rectangle selection, then use the "Rotate", "Scale" and "Move" tools in "Selection" mode (middle icon in "Transform:" row in the tools options) to rotate/scale the selection to your needed rectangle, then use the selection to crop.

A bit more complex, but you won't get any blur even if you do it in several steps:
- create a rectangle selection
- "Select/To Path" to make a rectangle path from it
- use the "Rotate", "Scale" and "Move" tools in "Path" mode (rightmost icon in "Transform:" row in the tools options) to adjust the path to your needed rectangle,
- when done use "Select/From path" to obtain a sharp selection from your path and crop to selection.

You could of course try to create a slanted rectangle path directly, or adjust the corners of the rectangles directly in the Paths editor. This is possible if you have markers in your original picture. Otherwise the method above insures that you are indeed creating a rectangle (angles are preserved by scale (with aspect ratio) and rotate ops)

RE: crop with rotation
similar to ofnuts proposal:

Gimp has never been the same as PS so get used to different ways.

What you can do
Make a selection
Use the rotate tool and in the preview option choose image + grid.
Rotate - drag the grid around or enter a value.
Then to crop - copy the selection and paste as a new image.
some screenshots that might help. http://i.imgur.com/DZr9M.jpg
and yes you are going to end up with transparent borders, until you flatten.
An image is a rectagle, no way round that.
edit: You could always make a larger than required rotated-pasted-as-new -mage and then use a regular crop on it.

RE: crop with rotation
Hi,
I also need this. Do you know of any Gimp tool or plugin able to rotate and crop at the same time, while preserving the ratio scale?
Thanks!

RE: crop with rotation
Have not come across such a tool, but there could well be one.

A work-around
Toggle the quick mask (shift-q)
Use a rectangular brush & white fg
Change size, aspect ratio, angle on the fly
Stamp out the selection & toggle quick mask off
