Creating specific size image for slider in Wordpress
Hi,

I'm sorry to ask what is probably a very basic question to those of you who have used GIMP for a very long time, but what I am looking for is - to take an original image, that by way of example is 2656 x 1768 px, and create a smaller image from it that is 960 x 400 px. The final image is intended to fit in a 'Slider' on the front page of a website that is created using Wordpress.

I know that I will only select 'part' of the original image, but I've tried numerous things, cropping, resizing etc... without success, and I'm getting increasingly frustrated. I have looked at various existing threads in the forum, but can't seem to find one that covers exactly what I'm trying to do. I guess there will be one somewhere, but I've not been able to find it so far.

If someone can help with a little bit of advice I would be enormously grateful.

Regards,

Alan

RE: Creating specific size image for slider in Wordpress
If you "crop" you are extracting part of the image, but keeping the same amount of details (on the area you keep). If you scale you make the image smaller (you make the same image fit in fewer pixels).

When you crop with the Crop tool (Crop), it's easy to enforce a given final size or aspect ratio (the "fixed" checkbox and related options in the Crop tool options).

When you scale the image, things are a bit more complicated if you want to reach a specific final size, because your original picture and the final one may not have the same aspect ratio (width/height, here, 1.5:1 for the original and 2.4:1 for the final). So, the recommend technique is to:

1) start the Crop tool, check "fixed", select "Aspect ratio" next to it, and enter your final aspect ratio (as "960:400") (and not as 960x400 which a specification of size)
2) select the part of your image you want to keep (you will have to drop at least some height). The settings at the previous step will enforce a correct aspect ratio. Click at the center to crop.
3) Image>Scale image: enter the required width (960) and if you did 1) and 2) correctly the height value will set itself to 400.
4) File>Export the image in a suitable format.
