Contrast Mask

Contrast Mask
I've been using gimp for a couple months now and I enjoy, but one issue has been a cause of slight frustration for me. When I make a contrast mask using the methods listed here: , in my photos my colors end up looking fairly different. In many cases the colors are less desirable and less natural than the original photo's colors, even if the shading issues are fixed.

Here's an example. Original:

The colors to me look much less natural in the second one, and overall the image just looks flatter. Especially in the mountains.

Could there be something I am missing or doing wrong? Thanks for any help!
