Changing the Appearance of GIMP
Can that be done? Right now everything is a light gray color, to bright and messy-looking. I'd like to change it to a darker gray, like the background color of this site, an easier-on-the-eyes dark gray.

All the tools and text boxes would stand out more on a darker background. Is it possible to do this, to customize the colors?

RE: Changing the Appearance of GIMP
also, websearch & download the GTK2 theme pack for gimp, if you don't have the themes you want.

RE: Changing the Appearance of GIMP
Okay, I found a bunch of new GIMP themes in about a dozen folders in a file called Better GTK2 Themes for GIMP 2.8.

My problem now is that when I click on GIMP in the Applications folder, the program starts. There is no window containing "Show Package Contents" and the rest of it. And I downloaded GIMP from right here, this site.

I just re-downloaded GIMP and I get the same thing, or rather I don't get the same thing. So now I'm completely stumped.

RE: Changing the Appearance of GIMP
Ok you can try adding the themes individually into gimp's theme folder. I just installed the gtk2 theme pack into gimp.

finding the folder to put the themes in
1 In Gimp, go to "Edit > Preferences > Themes" or "... >Preferences > Folders > Themes"

You should see "C:\Program Files\Gimp 2\share\gimp\2.0\themes\"

This is where (in explorer, or whatever folder manager you have) you'll put either the themefile.gtk, or its folder if it has one.
There should only be one theme in each theme folder, if any.

In explorer, open up your C:\Program Files\Gimp 2\share\gimp\2.0\themes\ folder for an example of the folder structure for each theme.

By default there should be two folders already
- Small
- Default

*After you install/drag drop the folder/theme into the themes folder, re-open gimp if its open, then
"Edit > preferences > Themes" should show your newly installed themes

Hope this helps

RE: Changing the Appearance of GIMP
When I go to "Preferences > Folders > Themes" I see this:

/Users/jaynorem/Library/Application/GIMP/2.8/Themes
/Applications/GIMP.app/Contents/Resources/share/gimp/2.0/themes

It's very odd, because my name appears there, and how did GIMP get it? But I tried to copy another theme folder into that directory and it wouldn't work. I tried locating the actual folder, but I had no luck.

For some reason my GIMP appears to be somewhat different from everyone else's. Strange.

RE: Changing the Appearance of GIMP
I understand.

So It's the Gimp installation tree that is either missing or bot there. Either way, I'm happy to leave what I have alone. After all, it's working fine, I'm enjoying it and it didn't cost me anything.

Thank you for all the help, ofnuts and iForStyle007.

RE: Changing the Appearance of GIMP
Anytime, but if in the near future you decide you want to mix it up a bit and have a new design to gimp, the folder structure with "share" in it should be the one you put the them in. I don't think you can have the theme in both directories, so alternate between the two to see what works.

Also, in most cases, things are installed under your directory & the username is whatever you named your computer. That's how the name got there. Same with mine

Take care Smile
