Changing 'Glowing Hot' Foreground Colour
Hey guys

So I want to create a simple thin glowing red bar. I want the red to fade into black, pretty much exactly like what the glowing hot tool does with yellow/white.

Is there anyway to do this?

Cheers

RE: Changing 'Glowing Hot' Foreground Colour
Do you want the red to fade into black, or to fade to transparency over some background which happens to be black? Usually one really want the latter:

For a glowing bar, you need actually two transparent layers:
- one with the bar/object at top
- one with the glow just below
- (plus some dark background layer)

For the glow:
- make the bar/object layer active
- Layer/Transparency/Alpha to selection (so you get a selection shaped as the object)
- make the glow layer active
- bucket-fill selection with glow color
- Filters/Blur/Gaussian blur with some large value (2 to 10x the object size/width)

For a simple bar, you can also look for "neon" scripts, including my own "neon-path":

http://gimp-path-tools.sourceforge.net/d...ions.shtml

Sample result:

Mate that spiral looks incredible! And thank you for the reply, I do, like you said want it to fade to transparency. Essentially exactly like you have the yellow, but a much shorter fade length (a couple of pixels). And the fade to be a bit brighter than what you have it there.

What I'm trying to design is very hard to explain, but have you ever seen buttons that have a thin horizontal light? Like the button may be black but then when you switch it on this thin bar illuminates. That's what I'm going for, and I'm having such a hard time because I want the red bar to appear raised as well. This is essentially why I'm doing the glow because I think it'd give it a raised feel, I don't actually want the light source to appear to be glowing unusually.

----

Edit: I just realised what I'm trying to emulate! Take a look at the top right hand corner of this image. Essentially making that green bar red. Though I'd like a few other changes. Like I said I'd rather it appear to be sticking out of the buttons by about the same amount the linked image seems to be sticking into the buttons.

Do you have any idea how I could go about this?

I don't see much glow in these green bars. I thought you were talking about something like this:

Yeah you're right, there isn't much glow. The light on those bars seems to be indented - like there's a hole from which the light appears. I want the opposite to be true for mine. I would like a light bar to be raised from the button, which illuminates when pressed.

I thought the raised look would be a result of a glow tool because of how this link (step 12) discusses making the wheel come out of the page. They use an outer glow tool. Is there a similar way to do this with GIMP?

RE: Changing 'Glowing Hot' Foreground Colour
It's not all due to the glow part. It's more like the bevel/emboss. My neon script uses slightly darker tones on the border to achieve the 3D look:

If you want the glowing object to pop out of a flat surface, you can also make the ends slightly asymmetrical or shift the glow
