changing a colour

I've opened a gif file (web icon) which has shades of green. I want to use this on another site of ours which is similar but has shades of orange.

I use the dropper to select the colour from a gif on the orange site - so the colour is there in the colour section box.

When I try to draw / fill on the green gif it ignores the orange colour selected and uses a green from green gif. A lighter orange gives a lighter green.

What is happening???

RE: changing a colour
Thanks for that!

I changed the file to png and I could re-colour as I needed to.

One still acted weirdly (eg. white came out cyan), but I could add an additional layer and recolour that one - then merge it down.
