Canon printing is poor with GIMP
I have a Canon Pixma iP4300 printer that prints perfect colors from Photoshop when I am using Windows. But the printed colors are washed out when I print from GIMP on Ubuntu (more than one version).

Most likely it is because the software driver is not correct--but perhaps it is another problem.

I have printed several test pages, changing the print options from CYMK to RGB, etc., but the default is best. I also downloaded Gutenprint but that did not solve the problem.

Anyway, GIMP is great for the monitor but I prefer the printed page for my photographs.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, S.

It is likely to be a matter of defining the correct color profile for the printer. I'm not an expert in that area but from my googling it seems the profile you get for Windows can be also used on Linux.

This said Canon printers aren't very Linux-friendly

You know, I never thought about the format! Will test and get back. Thanks.

I think you are on the right track. Any suggestions on how to find and download color profiles? (I recall having one on Windows that really helped).

No suggestions... actually I don't print photos on my (Canon) printer, the few deemed worth printing are much better handled by commercial print shops (that also turn out to be cheaper).

Have you tried using GIMP on your Windows system?

RE: Canon printing is poor with GIMP
To all kind responders;
1. Prints remain muddy for jpg
2. Could not find a color profile for ubuntu or gimp
3. Have not run GIMP on Windows since I have Photoshop on that system
4. Tried most of the manual adjustments on the print software that comes with U10.10. No improvement
5. I use professional shops occasionally to print special images but like printing my own stuff.
6. Plan B: I'll buy an inexpensive printer that will work with the Ubuntu/GIMP combination.

Anyone have a $100-$150 printer that works well with this combination? Thanks.

I hear Epson printers have decent Linux support. Get this confirmed on Linux forums before purchase, though :-)

RE: Canon printing is poor with GIMP
I normally run my GIMP off of a flash drive so that it does not take up space on my Hard Drive. I also have two other photo editing programs on my external hard drive.
Though it takes a bit more time to get to the programs, I find it worth it in the long run because I don't have to worry about my OS/hard drive getting over-run by programs, if that is your concern. I'm not sure if it makes a difference on the OS since I've never used Linux, though I'd like to. But I do suggest trying it on your windows to test before you go out buying a printer. The worst it could hurt? $0.25 worth of paper and ink and a few minutes transferring your GIMP onto a flash-drive.

It may be a problem down the correct color profile for your printer. I am not an expert in this field but I find that googling the profile you get for Windows can be also used on Linux.

RE: Canon printing is poor with GIMP
I have a canon pixma ip 4500, now a few years old and I swear I will never buy another canon. Mind I said that about Epson as well.

For linux, & I currently use PCLOS, (althought the same applies to my previous Mepis installations), the ip4500 is fortunate in that there are drivers from canon, but they are poor.

I get a max of 600 dpi when printing, just ok for 6" x 4" but anything over that & the print is grainy. I am with Ofnuts on this, and use an online printing company, except for DVD's which is the only reason the canon has not been junked. Even then I revert to a WinXP VM for DVD/CD printing. Black is the real problem, AFAIK the linux driver ignores the black cartridge and mixes from CMY.

For colour correction, have another look at gutenprint, it will let you do some colour corrections when you come to print. A pay-for alternative is TurboPrint, IMHO overpriced, comes with its own drivers not much more than an enhanced gutenprint.

RE: Canon printing is poor with GIMP
Same problem; got responses that suggested "printing" is something no one is interested in doing anymore! But went to a German firm called TurboPrint and paid something like $45 for their software....best prints I've ever had, including Photoshop on Windows. They are very careful to match your printer to your paper. One of their stock matches is to the Canon Matte Photo Paper MP-101. I bought a one-printer download and have used it on three operating systems as I've moved between computers. Hope this helps.
