Can use ink but not paintbrush?
I've looked everywhere and tried every possible solution I could find but don't know what to do. I'm in a transparent layer attempting to use the paintbrush tool but it won't work. I have the opacity at 100%. I can use the ink tool in the layer just fine.

What do do to fix this??? I've been searching and struggling for 2 hours now. Confused

More information required: What is the ink tool? edit: ok the calligraphy tool

Common complaints for things not working.

Check the image mode is what it should be: rgb/grayscale/indexed
Often an index image needs changing to rgb edit: this looks favourite so far.

Sometimes a very small selection needs to be removed.

RE: Can use ink but not paintbrush?
"It won't work" is a bit ambiguous, but since other tools work, check the Tool settings, in particular:
  • Mode: Normal
  • Opacity: should be 100%
  • Brush size
  • Brush dynamics: use "Dynamics off"
  • Smooth stroke: uncheck

Check the opacity setting of the tools

It's on RGB already. I also can't use the eraser tool. I've also checked selections and there is nothing selected to cause this issue.

Mode is normal. Opacity is 100%. Brush size is 50. Dynamics off. Smooth stroke is unchecked. It still is not showing up on any layer. I've tried in every layer and none will work. Also the eraser is having the same issue.

RE: Can use ink but not paintbrush?
I did notice that when I draw and nothing shows up, if I go to the undo tab it shows that the action happened but there's no visible marks on the picture I'm working on.

Update: So now I've closed gimp and the reopened it, opened a file that I worked on previously with the paint and eraser tool, and they aren't showing any visible marks in that file either.

Here's an example file. I just can't figure it out. I restarted the computer just in case and it's still not working.

Are there any possible obscure reasons it might not work? If I can't get it working soon, I might have to find an alternative program but I would prefer to stick with gimp.

Don't know. What OS / Gimp version?

Do you have lock alpha channels 'on'

RE: Can use ink but not paintbrush?
Looking at your test file everything looks OK (layer mode, layer selection..) but since it works with the ink tool I wasn't expecting much in that area. More questions

In Edit>Preferences -> Tool options -> Paint options share between tools, which options are shared?

What brush are you using?

Can you make a screenshot of your Tool options dialog when the paintbrush is up?

Can you paint in the attached file?

What if you erase/rename your Gimp profile?

RE: Can use ink but not paintbrush?
If your brush is the same color as your background gradient blend.
When you draw there, even if on the transparent layer, you won't see anything, making it appear invisible. Try picking a color other than black or white.

As for the calligraphy tool(ink) there is no gallery for the brush, you control the shape/brush under "Shape:" instead of "Brush:"

As mentioned by a mod above, try selecting a different brush for the brush tool in tool options "Brush:"

However, check your layer thumbnails (in the layers window). After drawing with the brush, does it appear there?

The eraser should work. But then it may be a similiar thing of switching the "Brush:" setting in the eraser tool also...
