Can't seem to merge layers

Can't seem to merge layers
Whenever I work with layers to try and achieve an effect I want, I have 2 or more layers. Then when I try to merge them to get the desired effect, "nothing happens!".

The other layers in the layers menu disappear and my picture remains unaltered, it's like whenever I draw in GIMP, all that editing is seen on my image, but when I try to merge my layers to get say, a glow effect, nothing happens to my image. It's like I didn't do anything. So frustrating!

Basically, what I do is this:

1. I create a new image.

2. I beginning stages of my image on whatever I want to do.

3. I create a new layer (or more than one, doesn't matter) to tinker around to try and achieve a certain effect (doesn't matter what effect I'm trying to achieve, always has the same results).

4. Then when I'm done tinkering around, I go to "Image--Merge Visible Layers"

5. Nothing happens. The multiple layers I had in the layers box vanish, but the effect I was trying to achieve is not merged with my image! Sad

I've browsed online and I can't seem to find any tutorial addressing my issue. Can someone help me please? Layers are useless to me because I can't use them, yet I need them to achieve the things I need to have in my art.

And before anyone points it out, no I am not looking for how to merge two images together in one, I want help with LAYERS not images.

RE: Can't seem to merge layers
"Merge visible layers" does what it says on the box. All the visible layers are combined into one single layer. The default (expand as necessary) makes all layers big enough to contain everything, and this is usually what you would want to do.

Download this attachment:
[attachment=440]

Load in Gimp, and, without changing anything, use the "Merge visible layers". This should combine in a layer called "3" the contents of the layers 1, 2, & 3.

Otherwise, make a small sample image that demonstrates your problem, save it as XCF just before the "Merge visible layers" step, and attach here.

Note: although it's important that you find out why "merge visible layers" doesn't work as you expect, you should know that its practical usage is fairly rare. It's best to keep the layers distinct, because you can rework them later. They will be merged automatically when you export your image anyway.

Tried following this Tutorial to create the same glow effect this guy did so I could implement something similar in an image I've wanting to do for a while. http://gimp-tutorials.net/gimp-glow-effect

Here's the attachment. This is the look I have even after I merge all visible layers.

RE: Can't seem to merge layers
A line that has glow on the outside is what I'm trying to achieve, like the attachment below. Sorry it's so small. Maybe I should have tried a better example.

But instead of getting my desired effect, all I end up with is the first image I began with (see attachment #1) whenever I click on the "Merge Visible Layers" option.

What I need is the picture *before* you merge the layers.

I'm wondering if your original layers have any transparency at all. Merging the visible layers doesn't change anything to what you see... if a layer is fully opaque all layers below it will disappear whether they are flagged as visible or not. To produce your image you should have from bottom to top:

- a fully black layer
- a mostly transparent layer, with the wide blue line
- a mostly transparent layer, with the thin white line

On the other hand picture 8 looks like picture 4 and 6 merged...

I did give you the image before I merged the layers.

Now I shall provide Screenshots so you can see what I'm doing.

These are the steps I take.

1. I create a new image, make it all black.

2. Then I create a new layer, name it Middle Line.

3. With Middle Line layer highlighted, I create my curved line using the path tool, I make the line color white.

4. I repeat step 3, but I make the line blue this time and call this Layer "another".

5. Then I add a Gaussian blur.

6. Below, there is an attachment "before" I merge the layers. The screenshot will show you where I am at on this step. Also, before I merge the layers. I did not touch any transparency in any of the layers.

http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/5400/capturehgm.jpg

7. Then I merge the layers and the picture remains unchanged from the picture I provided in the attachment and screenshot.

8. Then I follow your advice and place, from bottom up, a black layer, the blue line layer (titled "another") and then the white line (titled "middle Line") I make both the blue and white mostly transparent. This is the result, before I merge the layers, as you can see in my screenshot. But then when I merge the layers, remains unchanged. Again.

So, even when I tried making both the blue and white line layers mostly transparent, all I accomplished was changing the white line into a grey one.

RE: Can't seem to merge layers
OK, let me try with your pic:

Before merging:

[attachment=445]

After merging:

[attachment=446]

Of course the image is not changed because "Merge visible layers" just makes a single layer with what you already see.

On the other hand, compared to the original tutorial, your white line is a thick as the blue one, so it would totally hide it... So I drag your original white line layer to the bottom to hide it and replace it with a thin one, to get this file:

[attachment=447]

And for the merge operation, this gives:

Before:

[attachment=450]

and after:

[attachment=451]

And again, there is no change in the image displayed.

By the way, looking at the tutorial, there is no place where it says to merge visible layers, so what are you trying to achieve?
