Can't export to pdf
lenovo workstation
Windows 7 64 bit sp1
16 GB Ram
Intel Xeon CPU 31240

Every time I try to save a TIF file as a PDF, I get the following:

GIMP Message
Plug-in crashed: "file-pdf-save.exe"
(C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins\file-pdf-save.exe)

I have completely uninstalled, wiped all references (including ccleaner), re-downloaded, and reinstalled.

No change, on any tif files.

tif files open and display just fine, just cannot export them at all.

RE: Can't export to pdf
Which version of Gimp are you running?
Can you attach the offending tiff file?

v2.8.10
typical file attached; I had to remove some customer-specific sections before posting.

Attached File(s)
.tif  test.tif (Size: 774.32 KB / Downloads: 30)

RE: Can't export to pdf
@ greghyman

congrats, that file froze my Gimp, a touch of kernel panic, CPU maxed out and I had to force a log-out.

I think this is the problem, ImageMagick identify says this

test.tif TIFF 50308x7009 50308x7009+0+0 1-bit Bilevel Gray 793KB 0.010u 0:00.040

A tad on the large size. Are all the problem tif files similar? Are these scans of engineering drawings by any chance.

I even tried an IM conversion tif -> pdf that started, then stalled as well. I only have 2 GB ram here so that might be worth a try on your installation.

We deal with aerospace, automotive, and defense manufacturers; the standard form of file storage for those industries if tiff.
The majority of the drawings we deal with are this size.
Until about a month ago, we had used Pixedit for just about everything. Unfortunately, that had to go (annual maintenance issues)
I use Gimp on my home pc and laptop (both running Ubuntu) for photo editing, and figured the "export to pdf" functionality would work for us here, especially since windows has a terrible time figuring out what to do with a tiff file.
We can print PDF files from adobe with no issues, but tiff files almost always come out wonky - earlier this week, I sent several jobs to our plotter from the conference room; I ended up with nearly 50 feet of totally black paper.

I am not familiar with "an IM conversion tif -> pdf" - could you please elaborate?

RE: Can't export to pdf
A possible solution.

XnViewMP 'sees' the tiff file. looks like this http://i.imgur.com/ZZWNzho.jpg

XnViewMP is here http://www.xnview.com/en/xnviewmp/ you might consider giving the guy a couple of $$ donation if it works for you. He does an XNConvert as well which might be a better bet.

Converts to a 3.4 MB PDF

Lines are so fine looks blank unless near 100% viewing.

ImageMagick is a command line graphics utility. see http://www.imagemagick.org
