Can't access help files I just installed.
Hi People
I wanted help, and downloaded the help files, which seemed to install successfully.
But, when I tried to access them from the Gimp pull-down menu Gimp couldn't find the newly installed files and offered to find me help online.
What do I need to do?

RE: Can't access help files I just installed.
check in Edit>Prefererences>Help system: does it say there is a local installation of the user manual?

In Linux the help goes in /usr/share/gimp/2.0/help{language}/. On Windows, that could be
c:\program files\Gimp\share\gimp\2.0\help\{language}. It could also be a matter of language installed vs langage Gimp thinks you want to use.

RE: Can't access help files I just installed.
Hi Guys, PROBLEM SOLVED!

I found that I needed to set Gimp's preferences correctly for help to work.

To set the right flags first pull down the Edit Menu, click on Preferences, click on Help System, and then click on Help Browser. You need to ensure that Gimp will use the Web Browser.

Thanks People!

RE: Can't access help files I just installed.
After searching and trying hard to apply patience and common sense, I found your post. Thank you for posting it.

Of course! When I want to access the GIMP Help files I downloaded, and the GIMP Browser tells me "Error opening file: Invalid argument", I should have known that I should be using my regular web browser, not the GIMP Browser that opens when I press F1.

Seriously, why can't there be simple, clear instructions for doing simple things, like accessing the downloaded Help files?

Thanks for posting this!!! It took me 2 hours to find this help. The system language must be the same as help file installed language. It solved the problem of GIMP not recognising the help files I installed - so simple - thanks!

RE: Can't access help files I just installed.
Hey guys, here is a workaround:

Note: Moderators, please do not delete my repeating posts, since I have work so hard to find the 4 different threads this info can be of help in. Smile

The Help System, especially in the Mac version (2.8.2) has always been lacking (in the Mac version since there is not yet a native "GIMP Help System" yet)

I have also been having a problem with the help files. I am trying to install the 2.6 help file folder "en" into my GIMP 2.8.2. The closest I have come is having "Help System" in Preferences say that I have a copy of the manual installed, but when I open it GIMP gives me the following message: "gimp message calling error for procedure 'plug-in-web-browser': no application is registered as handling this file".

My workaround for this right now is to simply find two HTML files in the 2.6 Help Files en folder titled "index.html" and "gimp-help-index.html", oped each of these in Safari, and then make bookmarks where I can get to them easily.

I hope this helps. Until a Mac Native GIMP Help System is released this seems to be the most reliable way of having help files "installed" on your system. We just have to be patient.
