Can not open new dialogs in Win 7 Gimp [SOLVED]
OK, first let me say that I use Gimp all the time.......... IN LINUX. I'm trying to install Gimp 2.6.12 on a Win 7 machine for a friend. The installation went fine, but for some odd reason there is only the default dialogs panel on the left, but none on the right. When I try to open the layers dialog or any other dialog, absolutely nothing happens. Was there something else that needed to be installed prior to installing Gimp? I'm going to assume no since one dialog is already open. If anyone has any ideas I'd sure appreciate some input. Confused

I searched the web and found NO reference to this happening to anyone else.

Thanks,
VisLP

Oh, yea, I hope this was the right place for this question!

RE: Can not open new dialogs in Win 7 Gimp
IIRC (I'm on Linux too but I used to be on Windows) the Gimp-win installers are self-contained, and as you say if you get the other windows everything should be there.

One possibility is that these windows are opened outside of the screen or docked at the wrong place. Check the "sessionrc" file in the user's Gimp profile. You can even rename it and restart Gimp, that will create a new one that could be better.

Sorry about that! I was afraid it wasn't. It probably should have been in General.

I removed the sessionrc file and restarted, but i have the same result.

I just tried removing to whole profile folder and still the same results. Been fighting this since last night. I even tried installing 2.6.11 thinking it might work. No luck!

I just looked under "Windows" and it shows

"Toolbox" and
"Layers, Channels, Paths, Undo- Brushes, Patterns, Gradients"

is open. If it is, it's NOT on the screen anywhere!

What says the sessionrc file for these windows? You can try to edit this file (syntax is trivial) to make sure these windows are open at a visible place and with a decent size, and then restart Gimp.

The "sessionrc" file showed that panel at 32xx position, and my monitor is only 1920 wide. I changed it, reopened gimp and there it was! Can't quite understand why it would show it at that position with my screen not being that wide.

Thanks ofnuts!

Somehow Windows (of the GTK layer) thinks your display is that wide (support for dual monitors?).

Yep! Shut one down in Control Panel!

Thanks Again,

Come to think of it, this may be a standard (even if quirky) behavior. In dual monitor setups, there is usually one monitor for the picture and a secondary one for the toolbox & palettes.
