Can GIMP layer groups be opened in Photoshop?
Hi! I have a image that has many layers that are grouped by folders and I've just exported it to .psd and after opening the exported file to check it, I see that the Group Layers cannot be opened. I've also tested this in an on-line Photoshop program (I can't install the actual Photoshop in my computer).

Will someone that has Adobe Photoshop CS be able to open the Group Layers and edit them?

RE: Can GIMP layer groups be opened in Photoshop?
Just my findings

You will not get the layer groups saved in a psd file. When Gimp exports to a psd each layer group is merged into a single regular layer.
Maybe someone will write a PS plugin that will properly import a Gimp 2.8.x xcf file. ROTFL

My workaround, I hope there are better ways.
If only a few layers, drag each sub-layer out of the layer group.
If lots of layer groups and sub-layers, use a 'save-all-layers' type plugin.

Then File -> Open-As-Layers all of the 'devolved' layer-images as a new file and export to psd. The layers will be in more-or-less the correct order just not in layer groups.

This plugin works with layer groups (sort of)

Sort of, because it is picky about the order of the layers, I found that if there is a regular layer between layer groups you will lose layers. Works if you keep all the layer groups in sequence. Difficult to explain, you would need to try it.

it's not really what I've expected, I hoped to get a reply like "don't worry buddy! when you open an exported .psd file in Photoshop everything is fine! You can't even tell that it was made in GIMP".

Now, I'm starting to hate GIMP.. it's not that productive.. most of the clients ask for a .psd file.

this can cause many problems, it would be better if users would be notified that the exported .psd file is unusable, or better yet don't give the option to export for Photoshop if it can't deliver the content.

When saving the exported .psd file I didn't even get a warning saying something like "hey dummy, you have layer groups in image and GIMP will export a corrupt .psd file" Undecided
