Camera.
Been a while but I thought I would start a new thread as I'm planning on upgrading from my 450D canon. I know there's a fair few photographers around here and was wondering if any have owned, or still do, the 40D or 50D.
Basic questions are, is the upgrade worth it or would the money be better spent on lenses, my 450D still works okay but some of the low light images appear to have a fair bit of noise. Is the 40/50D a good choice or are some of the other Canon cameras a better choice. I'm sort of in the £300-£400 range so it's going to have to be a used camera.
I've been hunting around Amazon and Ebay but if anyone has any tips on places to look it will be much appreciated.

Cheers.

One other thing, can the 40/50D set of a hotshoe flash that isn't on the camera, remotely I guess. The 450D can't but I remember reading somewhere that the 40/50 can set it off by using the popup flash. I had to buy a cable for my 450 so as to move the flash away from the camera, it's one of those coiled 2 metre ones, move it more than a foot away from the camera and it pulls the tripod over, well worth the money that one.

RE: Camera.
I have a 450D and wouldn't even consider a 40D, which about the same camera (just a sturdier body). Among my current candiates;

- 600D: already better, still on sale but big discounts since it's superseded by the 650D/700D. In Paris the 600D (body only) is 380€.

- 650D: mostly same as 700D, just a minor problem with the grip material that forced Canon to hastily upgrade to the 700D. Hard to find new, but big discounts

- 700D: really nice camera. More expensive than the 650D, but easier to resell 2nd hand later

IIRC the 600-650-700 share the same sensor, the enhancement target more the video than th estill photography side.

- 60D: discounted here and there since now replaced by 70D. Can also be found 2nd hand.

- 70D: in my fantasies

RE: Camera.
Thanks for the info. I just had a quick scout around and the best price I could see for the 600D was about £270, the 700 is about a hundred pounds dearer and weirdly the 650 works out about the same price as the 700 or a little more.
I was a bit put off by these cameras as they have video capability which I thought was more of a gimmick than anything else, and not something I really need, but I like the idea of buying a new camera and not a used one. If I go for the 50 or 60D it will have to be a used one, new is out of my price range.
The 70D, if I win the lottery I might think about it.

I'm going to check out some reviews but I'm certain that it will be either 600/650 or 700D.

RE: Camera.
So I got my new camera a 600D. The picture quality is great although the lager RAW file sizes makes loading them onto the PC a rather slow process. Lots of new features to play with, love the revolving screen and being able to change lots of settings without having to go into the menu.
I also thought I had got a really good deal, still do, but it always pays to read the small print, which I didn't.
I paid £440 for the 600D with a 18-55mm lens and a 70-300mm zoom lens, it was from one of the big electrical retailers who still have shops here in the UK. The price seemed good in comparison to lot of stuff at E Bay and the like. When I got the camera home I was a bit disappointed to noticed that neither lens had image stabilisation, my own fault for not checking so no real room for complaint there.
Still, at the end of the day I'm happy with what I got and I just use one of my older lenses if I think I need a stabilised lens.

RE: Camera.
The 70-300 is likely the crap version as well (the good version is quite good) Smile
