Brushes and Patterns
I am useing the newest version of Gimp. Everything is great, it runs smooth and not many crashes
But! I cant make brushes or Patterns. in the older versions all you had to do was select what you wanted as a brush/pattern name it, and it would appear

Now, I get this
Error: (<unknown> : 18850791) Procedure execution of file-gbr-save failed: Could not open 'C:\Documents and Settings\Norseman\.gimp-2.8/brushes/mybrush14.gbr' for writing: No such file or directory

Am I missing something? Do I need to reinstall Gimp?
I havent loaded any new patterns or brushes, so I dont know why its not working?

Does the directory "C:\Documents and Settings\Norseman\.gimp-2.8/brushes/" exist?
I am using XP

No that path doesnt exist. The only thing as far as brushes is C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\share\gimp\2.0\brushes

Do I need to reinstall? I have added a few scripts and Gmic. Other than that I havent really messed with anything. I did have a really lame script package that I had to remove

There really isnt anywhere that says Gimp 2.80 10 anywhere except the desktop shortcut and the add/ remove menu
under programs, it listed as just "gimp"

RE: Brushes and Patterns
So I decided to go ahead and reinstall being that I didnt have many scripts or plugins installed yet.
So I reinstalled it using the same download. Didnt fix the problem. So then I decided to go and re download gimp, thinking the old one was corrupt.

Same thing, isnt loading said folders or files.maybe the new gimp just doesnt work for XP?

the program seems to run really well except for the fact that I cant make brushes or patterns, Something that I used to do, frequently
Should I step down to a lower version?

If you create the missing directory, does it fix the problem?
Nope
The more I get into this, It makes me wonder why it would be looking for files in "my documents" when it should be looking in the program files?

Why didnt it load the appropriate file in the first place?
You would think that after reinstalling that it would write the missing files but it doesnt
I tried renaming it but then all it wants to do is reinstall. I dont know what to do...

I went there, and there were two lines. One was checked (the wrong one) so I checked the correct one, and restarted gimp. It didnt make a difference it still gives Me the same message. Its looking for the file in My documents

Under the folders brush settings it still has the proper one checked but when I go to paste a brush, It gives Me the same message
This is really getting to the point where it makes no sense! You check the proper setting and it still doesnt work????????

RE: Brushes and Patterns
hmm... You aslo have the ability to make a new folder/path to reference your brushes in the section I described above. You could try making the folder described in the error. But first check...

The originally checked folder for brushes, click on the folder icon on the right side...
Does it take you to the folder in a window titled "Select Brush Folder" ?

Directly under the title is the path example: [<][Username][.gimp-2.8]

If not, go back to "Preferences > Brush Folders"
In the space next to the Green or red circle type, or copy paste
Code:
C;\Users\Norseman\.gimp-2.8\brushes
Then click the paper icon "New folder"
Also try typing in the space
Code:
C:\Documents and Settings\Norseman\.gimp-2.8\brushes
Then click the "new folder" paper icon

With these two new folders
Check only one folder at a time to test. Check one, Click, ok then restart Gimp.

RE: Brushes and Patterns
Thanks! I got it so I can make my own brushes and patterns

My problem now is, I cant load patterns or gradients into gimp
This is something I have done many times. I usually get gradients and Patterns from Deviant art and never had any problems with them working

Another glitch. When I make a Pattern, I cant delete it. The little Garbage can is a dull color and wont delete the pattern.
Can this be somehow related?

Could be, check:

Edit > Preferences > Folders > Patterns

the one selected should be

C:\Users\Norseman\.gimp-2.8\patterns

but I found all the brushes in the

C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\share\gimp\2.0\patterns

folder (if you click on the path you can copy & paste the above text box next to the green/red dot [____] and paste it into the address bar in win file explorer.

As for deleting the patterns you made, you can try deleting carefully from the folder iteslf (second one mentioned above.)

Just in case you overlooked it, You only need to focus on the patterns folder, but see this post above.

Alright I found the file.C:\Documents and Settings\Norseman\.gimp-2.8

But how can I get patterns/gradients to load? do I copy them to that file instead of the programs\share\ file?

RE: Brushes and Patterns
OK , theirs got to be something I am doing wrong.
I unzipped and copied some patterns directly to the documents and settings patterns file. That didnt work....when I copy them to the normal place, the share files, I get this error message

Failed to load data:

Fatal parse error in pattern file 'C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\share\gimp\2.0\patterns\Meta Mesh Patterns (pack 1) - by Axertion.pat': Unknown pattern format version 65536.

This happens when I try to load patterns/brushes and gradients. I can "Make" patterns and brushes.but it wont let me load anything from the internet. These are ones I have used many times before on earlier versions and they worked fine.

I found where "My Patterns" are but they are listed as My Patterns, with a number next to it so I dont know which pattern it is I want to remove, so I will just keep it,

I am starting to understand what you two are talking about, but the more sense I am making of the file folders and the Documents and setting, It should work?

Gimp itself works great! I have GMIC and some other scripts, they all work fine.Gimp loads really fast cant say enough good about the new version except I am having trouble adding brushes, patterns and gradients, thing that I did frequently

I wonder if its because I am using Windows XP? maybe theirs nothing I can do?

Try renaming your pattern file to

Mesh Patterns(pack1).pat

Certain characters aren't allowed in filenames.

Try this tutorial except do the same process for the patterns

I doubt it, working with folders can be a little frustrating(typing errors, wrong locations, read/write access, etc.), you will persevere! Smile

That is the best place (your Gimp profile) for any of your own resouces, so for patterns
C:\Documents and Settings\"yourname"\.gimp-2.8\patterns is the place

Apart from all the spaces in the file name (horrible windoze habit), it does not matter, that is a PS multi-pattern, and one that does not work in Gimp.

Quote:..I wonder if its because I am using Windows XP? maybe theirs nothing I can do?
Nothing wrong with XP, you probably need a better file manager but that is another story.

What you can do.
Although the file "Meta Mesh Patterns (pack 1) - by Axertion.pat" does not work, there is in the zip a folder of png files. Each png file works in Gimp as a pattern.
Either
copy all the png files to C:\Documents and Settings\"yourname"\.gimp-2.8\patterns
or (assuming Gimp 2.8)
copy the PNG folder over to C:\Documents and Settings\"yourname"\.gimp-2.8\patterns

something like this
[Image: qqBlvkJ.jpg]

the split view on the left is the patterns folder. Delete the meta.bla-bla-bla.pat file from wherever you put it. The blue box is the contents of the PNG folder.

Nice set of patterns, a keeper.
