I don't know what this stroke/fill thing you're talking about is!! and not only that my path tool WON'T do a curve like yours shows! I know NOTHING about paths! Ofnuts is ALWAYS so vague, Rich2005 ALWAY makes it so I NEVER need more info

RE: best way to finish the tongue on this bird
1. Enlarge you work space so you have room to add the tongue. From the menu --> Image --> Canvas Size and add some room either pixels or percent.
2. Next from the menu --> Tools --> Paths
3. Click a end point of the missing tongue. Then click the other end point of the missing tongue.
4. You should have two circles and a line connecting them. Click the LINE and drag it to where you think the tongue should end.
5. Windows --> Dockable Dialogs --> Paths
6. Right click your unnamed path, on the submenu use stroke path.
7. Set the thickness you need and hit the button "Stroke".
8. Right click your unnamed path, and delete.

Some people post too many bumps and social conversation I would guess?

@Wendy: too true lol. On a small note I like your cartoon tutorial, really cool, you should check out some of mine. I found photo to drawing tutorial that looks like colored pencil art.

@MR: Another way that might work out for you if after visiting the doc.gimp site you still can't figure out is using the freehand select tool and bucket fill, expand the canvas size like Wend Black said, then use the freehand/lasso select tool to draw the missing curve(complete the selection before bucket fill.)

Another way

Increase the size of the canvas (obviously)
Make a selection of the end of the tongue.
Paste that selection back in. Do not anchor until the very end.
looks like this http://i.imgur.com/9craiz5.jpg

Flip the selection horizontally.
Move / rotate to get some alignment. A bit of trial and error here.

Move to match existing and anchor the selection.

less than a minute.
