Best tools for warping/distorting photo texture to UV
Hi.

I've been a long time admirerer of GIMP and it has always sufficed for smaller tasks. Right now I'm getting reaquainted with 3d modeling and decided to use gimp as my editor. It happens though that I have come to an impasse and can not find a tool that would do what I want to accoplish for a task that has not been trouble when using Photoshop.

Here's the problem. I have a UV map exported from Blender that contains the area that I need to texture. I also have photos of the same areas that I have imported to GIMP. Now I need to manipulate the photo texture to cover the UV map precicely. It's easy to resize the photo selection to pretty much correct size but now I need to warp the photo to really make it fit the UV. On Photoshop this can be accomplished with the warp tool. On gimp the closest I've come is the iWarp filter but that doesn not let me see the UV mask at the same time as I warp the photo so can't see if my manipulation is correct or not.

Am I using the best tool for the job? How would you accomplish this task?

Just using standard tools. I had to recreate a bit of your template, so allow for this.

Using the template layer, make as an exact selection as possible. I used the paths tool in polygonal mode since the template looks not so curved. All sorts of ways to make a selection.

Selecting the 'pattern/object' layer, move it to the best possible fit,

Invert the selection and cut the excess.

Invert the selection again back to original and fake in any missing bits with the clone tool or the blur tool.

Thank you for your quick reply. I'm currently solving the situation similarly cloning the texture to fill in the empty space but this is still not optimal as the original ratios between different pieces of texture get distorted. It would be ideal to use a warp/distort tool so the pattern gets stretched to exactly what it should be. I'm having trouble explaining exactly what I mean but the point is that while I agree that clone lets me get a passable result, I'd still prefer a distort operation. I tried perspective tool which looks at first like it might help but then when operating on one end of the texture it screwes up everything I have lined up at the other end. IWarp filter does the right thing but doesn't let me see the result with the mask layer so it becomes guess-work. Cage transform seemed extremely promising but doesn't seem to move the edges of the texture at all.

Isn't there anything else that allows that kind of transformation?
