Bamboo Pen: Cursor Missing
Hi Everyone,
I recently bought a Bamboo Pen tablet to use with GIMP and have been installing under Windows (XP).
The tablet installs fine, is recognised by GIMP and I can draw with the stylus. Excellent.
The only problem is that the cursor/arrow is missing which means that I can draw things but I only know where the stylus is when I start to write/draw.
I am hoping that this is a simple settings issue and that someone out there can advise me how to make the cursor/arrow visible?
Many thanks for any tips that you can give.
Regards and thanks,
Alan

RE: Bamboo Pen: Cursor Missing
The settings that I have there are both check-boxes ticked and then "tool symbol" and "black and white" selected.

I have tried adjusting these and indeed the mouse symbol does change. But it doesn't seem to affect the stylus cursor/pointer which remains invisible.

But the stylus itself works fine (with a good smoothness and feeling). It's just that I can't see where it is before I start to draw.

I have also looked in the input devices menu and see that the stylus is recognised there. But there doesn't seem to be a setting to show the stylus pointer.

As it is the stylus does not replace the mouse pointer (as I was expecting) but rather exists separately. Maybe I'll try deactivating my mouse in GIMP. Would that help?

Regards and many thanks,
Alan

RE: Bamboo Pen: Cursor Missing
By the way ...

Previously I had an old pen tablet which I borrowed from a friend.

I would just plug that in (without software) and it would simply replace the mouse. That was perfect. It didn't have any fancy features (such as touch sensitivity) but I didn't need those as I did most adjustment with the settings in GIMP.

Is there any way do do this with Bamboo Pen? It would be great if I could simply say "tablet replaces mouse".

Many thanks for your help.

Regards,
Alan Searle

What says the "Show pointer for paint tools" box? Did you try to navigate this dialog using the tablet (in case there are settings that are pointer-dependent?)

I don't think so. In fact Gimp is designed to work with several pointers (on my Bamboo there are two pointers: regular pen tip (pressure sensitive) and eraser tip.

Can you go in your Gimp profile and copy here the contents of the "gimprc" and "devicerc" files?

RE: Bamboo Pen: Cursor Missing
Dear Ofnuts,

Many thanks for your feedback and tips.

As it is, I now believe that the problems with the Bamboo Pen are not specific to GIMP: Indeed, the unit seems to work fine with each of the drawing tools supplied by Bamboo but when I leave those environments and either try to activate something in Windows or with GIMP the cursor/pointer reacts unpredictably with it being clear that the cursor is active (in Windows and in GIMP) but no pointer being visible and with the location of the apparent pointer seeming to jump wildly.

This is extremely frustrating but I don't think it's a GIMP issue.

Sorry for bothering the forum ... but I will post a comment once I work it out.

Regards and thanks,
Alan

Possibly the pointer icon isn't displayed where the pointer actually is. I have heard/read someone complaining about that once (on Gimpforums?). if this offset is big enough the pointer icon is off-screen and not visible.
