Background
Hello,

I am taking photo's of jewellery on a white background which shows as anything on a colour scale from light blue through to grey. What I would like help with is how can I make all my background colours the same shade of white. Hope this makes sense, any help would be appreciated, thank you.

RE: Background
This usually means you have a color balance problem. The script here:

http://luca.dealfaro.org/Whitebalance

is pretty effective: you pick the color of what should have been gray (or white) on your picture, and it tweaks the colors so that it becomes neutral gray/white. There can be some case where it doesn't work, though, but when it does it makes things really easy.

If your camera allows it, it would be a better idea to set the camera: usually you take a picture of pure white (your background) and you tell the camera to use that to set up itself so that your photos come out neutral directly.

Thank you for your speedy reply it was very helpful. This is all a bit new to me and now that I have the download would you please be kind enough to talk me through exactly how and where I save the download to. I have associated the file to Gimp but clearly this is not the right way to do it. Thank you in advance, Anne

You locate your Gimp profile using this tutorial and you copy whitebalance.scm in the "scripts" folder you will find there. You will find the script in "Filters/Colors/White balance..." once you restart Gimp after the copy.

The same author has a slightly more powerful script: http://luca.dealfaro.org/Colortemp that goes in the same place and appears next to the other in the menus. You can use it to correct the color temperature of your images even if you have no white/gray reference in them (but you have to know a bit more about the actual shooting conditions and about color temperature in general).
