"Auto smoothing" a Path in GIMP 2.8.6?
I'm an experienced Software Project / Product Manager that's brand new to GIMP. I took up the program to facilitate completion of a small project for a 16-year old daughter that's making an incredible recovery from a serious illness. I provide this background because I'm currently "a bit" impatient - and I'm HOPING GIMP can be used to get this done. What we're looking at is a VERY small "Heart Locket" our daughter was given at birth. What I'm looking to do is create "photo masks" for my wife and my faces so we can "craft" the photos in the requisite size (~1/8"x1/8") and shape (heart)! So far I've succeeded in importing a photo I'd taken of the Locket's interior with a Macro Lense at a "workable size," such that the finished "mask" can be scaled to match the photos we're using, then scaled down to final size in photographic process. And while I'm VERY impressed with Path Tool, I CAN'T find a way to eliminate the tedium of "hand-smoothing" the result. I actually found a plugin that'd been developed for this purpose in 2009, but fails to install because it's looking for (what I have to assume is) an older dll. I CAN'T be unique in this need, can I???

RE: "Auto smoothing" a Path in GIMP 2.8.6?
Your in luck cobrien84, I may have found a better tool that comes with Gimp!
My best wishes to your daughter for a speedy recovery!

Intelligent Scissors(link for examples info of tool/options)
http://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-tool-iscissors.html

*I highly advise you read/skim the cautions and info on the tool then you can start below Smile

-Click on the scissors icon
In the tool options
(Check these options)
-Antialiasing
- Interactive Boundary

Now click your first point, then click & drag and you will see the path selection line shape around the heart, continue process(click & drag) until you come back to the start of the shape. Click on starting point to close it.
-Push enter to complete/make selection.

If the selection is too small or big, grow or shrink it.
Select > Shrink : 1 px
Select > Grow: 1px

If the selection is a little rough, smooth it:
Select > Feather: 30.0 px or less
(I tested the selection on a locket picture 432x250 with above settings)

Good luck! maybe post up the results you get or your image size (WidthxHieght) in pixels, so I can adjust my tests better.

Was it this plugin http://registry.gimp.org/node/20069 and if it was more could you give details of the error.
or
Which plugin and what dll's are missing. The naming convention changed for some dll's from 2.6 to 2.8 and often easy to fix.

I use smoothpath frequently but in linux. I have just tried the 32 bit plugin in a win7 64 bit Gimp 2.8.4 and it works fine there.
There was a 64 bit version (by samj) but it seems to have vanished forever, even from the internet archive site.

However I do not think it will do what you require without lots of trial & error and far better to work with basics for a simple shape such as a heart.
Not a very good heart you say, but it took maybe 30 seconds, far quicker than it took to edit these screenshots.

RE: "Auto smoothing" a Path in GIMP 2.8.6?
rich2005: I'm absolutely overwhelmed with the support I've received in this forum, two responses within six (or so) hours speaks VOLUMES about the GIMP Community! Your first point about "which plugin" was absolutely spot on, it WAS <http://registry.gimp.org/node/20069> and the (install time) error is "The program can't start because libgimp-2.0-0.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem." I searched my PC for similarly named dlls (in vain) before posting my question (and going to sleep)~! Your tip about "smoothpath" is VERY interesting; while I'm not finding any obvious link in preliminary Googling, I'll be a bit more persistent and see what turns up. (I LIKE the additional context menu choice shown in your first screenshot!) I'll also experiment with the "Intelligent Scissors" as suggested by "iForStyle007;" I've got a LOT of learning to do~! Thank you VERY much! /cobrien84

I think there ls the problem. There is no other way of using the plugin, apart from the context menu in the paths dialog.
How were you attempting to start it?

RE: "Auto smoothing" a Path in GIMP 2.8.6?
OK, I'm officially and RIDICULOUSLY embarrassed~! The "latent impatience / anxiety" that's attended my daughter's recovery led me to double click on the smooth-path.exe, resulting in the "missing dll" error. Upon READING the readme.txt provided with the plug-in, and COPYING the exe to the plug-in folder, I've got the SAME additional context menu choice shown in your first screenshot - and it works GREAT. (Not that I won't also take some time to learn a bit about the "Intelligent Scissors" as suggested by "iForStyle007".)

iForStyle007: While I've yet to try the "Intelligent Scissors," I've spent the time to complete the Path - and I've learned (as it may show below) that I didn't install the "smooth-path.exe" properly. Now that I have (I've attached a screenshot of the results PRIOR to "smoothing") it's clear that I'll need to spend a bit more time. Thanks for your response, suggestion of "Intelligent Scissors," and best wishes. Things ARE looking up! cobrien84

RE: "Auto smoothing" a Path in GIMP 2.8.6?
anytime cobrien ^_^ glad to help! Hopefully maybe now rich can help you out with those missing/corrupted .dlls that you mentioned(see above posts)

Additionally, two more things, if you didn't know, you can curve each line by clicking & dragging on the paths tool, for a smoother selection.

Second,
The sissors tool IMO is better once you learn it, its like a preview version of PS's magnectic lasso, maybe even better, as it doesn't commit to the edge until you let go of the mouse button Big Grin.
