Attached files will not open
Hi,

This is weird. I am trying to view questions here and you know the "attached files'' that you have to click on in order to view? I am unable to open them. Instead of it opening it downloads a blank icon on my desktop. I tried with different browsers and the same problem. Any ideas? Thanks a lot in advance.

A few more details might be helpful.

What OS are you using? (Mac, windows, linux...)

What does the the blank file say on it? Does it have a .XCF extension at the end of the filename

example.XCF or is it example.jpeg / .gif, etc....

In the case of an .XCF (gimps native format like .PSD) you'll want to open up gimp first, then drag & drop the file onto the canvas.

Also, if you can link to the question/thread you're having trouble with, that would be great too.

RE: Attached files will not open
iForStyle, yes it is a .XCF file. You are right if I drag it into gimp it is fine. I did not think of trying that. If that is the way I need to go, fine, however if I could open it as it should open that would be great!
To answer your question, I am using Win7. I could post an example but it happens to all attachments.

ofnuts,
Yes it happens to every attachment I try to open. I don't know why I get these dumb problems on my computer.

Thanks guys for your help, very appreciated.

OK, that makes sense now. Sometimes I just don't think of the obvious. You guys are making Gimp so much easier and fun. Thanks for being there, very appreciated.

One more tidbit (assuming you have the regular gimp installed, might not work with portable)

You'll need to associate Gimp to open the .xcf if you want it to open them each time.

things you'll need
(lol I like to make tuts of every thing, this is short I promise XD)

- The folder you downloaded the .xcf file to open in explorer
- right click menu
- The path to the gimp.exe file
(this is usually in C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\bin\ ...
- - "gimp-2.8.exe" <-pick that one or whatever version gimp you have

1.__Right-click the .xcf file
2. in the menu, click on "Open with..."
3. Pick "select program from a list of installed programs"

_____Look for Gimp on the list, if it doesn't show up, click "Browse" &
go to the location of Gimp.
(Alternate: If you have a shortcut on your desktop, check the properties/ open file location and look at the address bar.)
C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\bin\ ...
4. Select the .exe for your gimp version, in mine its gimp-2.8.exe
5. Click ok, then again if you have too. The .xcf file might change to show the gimp head icon.

Done ^_^ Hope it works

RE: Attached files will not open
iForStyle,

Yea I do that a lot with opening files. For some reason with This one I was just expecting it to open differently, and I got too focused on that and I forgot my options.. Sorry...I feel foolish. Thanks so much for your time.
