all font characters render as asterisks (*) in Gimp 2.8.8

all font characters render as asterisks (*) in Gimp 2.8.8
all font characters in ALL fonts render as asterisks (*) in Gimp 2.8.8 which 2.8.6 had the SAME issue!!! looks like I need to go BACK to 2.8.4 because ANYTHING later WON'T render fonts! what gives???

Hm...wonder what he did this time LOL, anyways when you get back...

That is a peculiar bug you have in your gimp. On my first websearch I found this thread in the gimp registry.

Including a post or two by one of our gimp buddies here ^_^

different problem and it DID NOT fix the issue!! still Asterisks!!

So did you try gimp 2.6? If there are no features that you benifit from 2.8.4 or 2.8.6, then 2.6 would be a good alternative. still asterisks?

You could try resetting your gimp profile (there are multiple threads on here that either link or show how)
Only other thing I can think of is
It could be a corrupt system font catch. Find out how to refresh/reinstall them in your operating system or what to do if their corrupt.
