Question alignment tool not doing what i need it to, butting images together?
hi, i'm trying to 'butt' two [or more] images together side by side.
the alignment tool Align isn't quite doing it, i might be using the wrong tool or the right tool the wrong way.
this seems like a really simple task but is doing my head in, i've seen a few tutorials for the alignment tool but they don't seem to cover this.
i can do it manually sort of by using the move tool Move but i want to 'automatically' have them butted/joined so they line up perfectly.

any help would be much appreciated

when using irfanview [windows] the panorama tool was perfect and simple, i could just line up images right next to each other very quickly.

The Alignment tool only aligns side or center lines of layers, it doesn't deal with their contents.

But a panorama tool use common content in both image parts, and I don't see any in your sample (or I'm mistaken as to what your layers are).

If you need to adjust some layers with common content, a good trick is to put the top layer in "difference" mode. When the two images match, the display goes black.

The exact-aligner script will also move/rotate/scale a layer so that two designated points on it exactly match two other reference points (on another layer, usually).

the image i used up there has been flattened so may not be the best example, i just want to 'align' layers or images, surly the gimp can do this without any additional plugins?!

Depends a lot on what you can "align" and what the subject of the alignment is, which isn't yet totally clear to me.

Then, Gimp isn't designed a s a single-team effort like PS or other software, it has been designed from the start to be easily extensible with script and plugins, so that the quite small developer team can concentrate on core functionality .

say a collage of photos but not overlapping and all the edges touching, like for an ebay photo so i only have to use 1 photo.
i'm convinced this can be done i just don't know the terms to use to describe what the process is actually called Undecided
i can drag them around with the move tool but something automatic is what i want.
the alignment tool almost does it, but instead of aligning the left edge and the left edge i want to align the left edge of 1 image/layer to the right edge of another so they are side by side with no overlaps perfectly aligned.

That's not alignment, that's abuttal.
Try this:
- check that "View/Snap to guides" is activated
- on the "fixed/reference/anchor" layer do: "Layer/Transparency/Alpha to selection"
- Then Image/Guides/New guides from selection
- This will create 4 guides around your fixed layer
- When you'll move other images they will just snap to these guides.

that works! it's a bit clunky though, i'll keep experimenting [epitomic linux quote] i wonder if there's a way to create a guide for one edge only instead of all 4? like a line to snap to.

It should be quite simple to script.

If you plot one against the other, you'll find it is indeed the case.
