align text to curves or circles
I would like to insert some text and have it aligned to a curve or circle. Preferably the curve would not be visible, but used only to align the text.

Thank you.....

There are plenty of 'how-to's' around. This is one I did some time ago. Covers the main points

The text-along-path button in the text tool as described above is the canonical method, but:
  • You have very little control on how the text is layout. Actually you shoot first and correct later (test is left-justified on the path, and you don't know where a closed path starts).
  • Characters are distorted: when text is laid around a circle, parallel vertical lines in the characters all converge towards the center of the circle.

To improve on this I wrote this script that doesn't distort the characters and gives you a lot more control on how the text shows up on the path segment (left/right/center/stretch, height control, and various more frivolous options). Your Gimp needs to have support for python scripts.

Thanks for response.......

I'll try the built-in thing first, and then your script when (and if :Huh) I learn how to use them.

I'm a relative, no make that definite, beginner with Gimp, having used it only a few times, and not for anything special. My goal here is to make some sort of creative watermark for some pictures. I might even go hog wild and try to have the text or image color change (not dynamically) across it's span.

Thanks again......

RE: align text to curves or circles
My Gimp GPA hasn't gone up any yetSmile but I did manage to install Python after one false start.

The instructions I found had me install Python and three Python extensions and "then" Gimp. So I uninstalled Gimp and tried that route. I didn't pay attention to one error message from one of the extension installations, and when I was done, Gimp was dead because it couldn't find a dll it was looking for.

Then Idea I realized that this was probably related to the error message I had gotten and not being able to fully install something.

So I started all over again, and this time on the extensions I used the "Run as administrator" option and the only messages I got were at the end of the three extensions that said something about a "destructor" function not completing.

But Gimp starts up fine now, Python shows up where it should, and I'm sure when I get that far, your extension will also.

I'm still a little confused as to why Python was to be installed before Gimp, but since it worked, I can't quarrel with success.

Because of Gimp finds Python available it does the right setup automatically. You can also install Python after Gimp and tweak the Gimp configuration, but it is somewhat longer to explain and a bit more error-prone, so people explaining things in forums take the easy route Smile
