Additional Downloads
Hi,
I just downloaded Gimp 2.8 and was wondering if there was anything else I needed to download before I got started with the learning curve, and it looks like a long one.

Many times when you download a program like this, you notice there are a lot of additional add-ons, like plug-ins, etc., and when you start to read about them everything kind of runs together and becomes much more complicated than it should be. I'm afraid I might step into the trap of wanting everything right now instead of just working with what I need. I'd appreciate any advise to get me started in the right direction, thank you.

Ciao,
John

RE: Additional Downloads
A good place to start is here and
http://gimpforums.com/thread-what-is-my-...-i-find-it

You need to know this for the location to place scripts 'something.scm' or plug-ins 'something.py/exe/dll' also resources such as extra brushes or fonts.

What can you get in the way of scripts and plugins - main source is http://registry.gimp.org/ but this can be somewhat chaotic at times.

Another source for scripts and info is http://www.gimphelp.org/script28.shtml a bit out of date but viable.

Otherwise, get to know and understand the basic Gimp functions first. You can get all the basics with the online documentation

http://docs.gimp.org/2.8/en/

Any specific questions - then ask here.

Hey guys,

For some reason I keep on double-posting. Is it because I'm editing my previous post or what?

RE: Additional Downloads
Hey guys,

Sorry about the double-post.

I was wondering. I downloaded a slew of effects from the Gimp Help! website but I haven't loaded them yet. He says that he has updated all of the files to work in 2.8 so I thought I would try them. Do you just load them with the original effects that come with the program or can you load them as a separate menu, like G'mic or the other collections?

Any help would be appreciated.

Ciao,
John

RE: Additional Downloads
There is a lot there in that zip file. I made it 109 scripts.

The good thing is they are all set up to go in a single menu entry - 'script-fu'. This is a legacy from the 'old days' when many scripts used this menu.

Looks like this screenshot. http://i.imgur.com/OAmvmjt.jpg

Installing them. You will probably never need all of them, so you could try them one or two at a time, copy them into your local .\gimp-2.8\scripts folder. Be careful because there is also a sub-folder 'presets' for one of the scripts. There is also a useful '1_install' text file with advice

I think a better way is to copy the whole unzipped archive folder (calls itself gimp_scripts-2.8) containing the 109 scripts + sub-folder into .\gimp-2.8. Then set up Edit -> preferences -> folders -> scripts and add that to the script folder locations.
Can be a bit tricky for beginners but looks like this http://i.imgur.com/EMYnsJt.jpg

As Ofnuts pointed out, these effects can be created from scratch, but not getting too serious about these things, most of them are good fun.
