A somewhat different question regarding coloring...
I have scanned several images at a very high resolution, with hopes of being able to recolor them in Gimp. They are sort of stained-glass-y in nature, which should make filling in the spaces with the bucket tool pretty straightforward, right?

Here is a sample: http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m2aze3...1_1280.jpg

My problem is that I already colored them with ink before I scanned them, and so the fill is not perfect- there are patches of slight differentiation within any given space of solid color. This is problematic because I cannot use any of the usual ways of removing ALL of a given color.

I basically want every color that is not black gone from these images so that I may recolor the empty spaces with the bucket tool. Does anyone know an efficient way to go about this?

RE: A somewhat different question regarding coloring...
Using the select by color tool you can set the tolerance high enough to grab all of the black and some of the color around it. You then can reduce the tolerance and subtract from the selection with the colors you don't want. That should get you 90% of the way there, you may have to do a little bit of hand editing if it isn't quite smooth enough.

All sorts of ways, you could try

Change the Image menu -> mode from RGB to indexed. Set the maximum number of colours to 10 or 12.
Bring up the Window menu -> dockable dialogs -> colormap.
Change all the non-black colours to white, (click on each in turn and select white from the edit window)
Back to the Image menu and change the mode back to RGB

looks something like this. http://i.imgur.com/24DOD.jpg

Might/might not be what you want.
