a REALLY basic question
Someone please help me before I throw another monitor out the window.

I'm using GIMP first time, trying to make an image list. These are the steps I need to do:

a) Open an existing square image (say 32 x 32 pixels)
b) Resize the canvas so its 3X as wide (32 x 96)
c) Make two copies of the original image and paste them in a row beside the original
d) Alter the hue and contrast of each copy.

In other words, if my original image was an X, I want a new image that is an XXX (with the second and third 'X' slightly modified)

I get to step b. When I resize the canvas, the "new" area is a black-and-white checkerboard. So I select the original image, CTRL-C to copy, CTRL-V to paste --- but when I try to drag it into the new area, it vanishes beneath it. Some kind of layering issue? I can't figure it out, no matter what I do.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. The life you save may be my own. Sad
