a couple of questions from a newbie
I'm using gimp in windows and these are my questions ^_^
#1. Can I delete the contents of the .thumbnails folder?
#2. Is there a way to lock a layer so that it won't move when I'm using the move tool? Or do I really have to point my mouse to the exact location of the layer/object I want to move?
#3. How can I save the layout of my gimp setup? Every time I maximize the window it goes back to being a restored window whenever I open gimp.
These are my questions for now. ^_^ Thanks in advance to those who give the time to answer these. ^_^

First off, Welcome to Gimp Forums, Jeidern! Smile

I'm assuming you mean the folder at
C:\Documents and Settings\{YourUserName}\.thumbnails\
This isn't a Gimp related folder, it is part of Windows. Gimp stores its user settings in C:\Documents and Settings\{YourUserName}\.gimp-2.6\ and its sub-folders. The other folders in the {YourUserName} folder don't belong to Gimp. Here is a Wikipedia page that'll tell you about the Windows Thumbnail Cache.

The move tool can work on layers, selections, or paths. If you are trying to move an area that you have selected, you need to change the move tool from its default (move layer) so that it will move the selection instead of the whole layer.

When set to move a layer there is also a setting that will let Gimp choose which layer it thinks you want to move based on where you click ("Pick a layer or guide") or you can set it to move the active layer ("Move the active layer"). If you are trying to move a layer but the wrong one is moving, change this setting and then make sure the layer you want to move is the highlighted one in the layers dialog. You can also change this temporarily just by holding down the shift key.

You can save your layout by going to Edit > Preferences, then click on Window Management on the left side, then on the right side look for the button that says Save Window Positions Now. Unfortunately this won't let you start up with your image window maximized. I believe I read once that this has something to do with Gimp having 3 separate windows. This will probably be corrected in the upcoming version 2.8 which is supposed to have a "single window" mode. But until then, you can simply start Gimp and then just hit the F11 key which maximizes the image window.

RE: a couple of questions from a newbie
Apologies for resurrecting this thread however it directly relates to the 3rd point in the OP..

GIMP 2.8RC1 is now out and the remember window position forgetting that GIMP was maximised is still an issue (even with Single Window Mode enabled). Any word on this?
